If you want to see some pretty country, and are in Ensenada, I would take the route that took me to Tecate, Mexicali and then turn right on Mexico Hwy
8 and head to Rocky Point. You are in Mexico the whole time and I have been on all of those roads and they are pretty good. There will be a lot of
trucks on most of that route but one can live with that (If you keep up with them )
If you want the fastest way, I would agree the US 8 to Gila Bend and south to Lukeville is the one. Either way, have fun.

Yes, I left out Mex 2 because it is the only road from Tecate to Mexicali and beyond and is on the Map. When you get get to that intersection (in
Mexico) south of Lukeville, that is where Mex 8 begins. Mex 8 is not on the map I put up earlier, but it is on the map in this post.

Rocky Point is an ugly, party town for AZ kids. If you want to go somewhere nice on the mainland continue south to San Carlos. There is no

Best to take the I- 8 to Gila Bend and then go South. Cross at Lukeville. The Mexican side is Sonoita. Drive through, and at the junction bear to
your right.
There's a huge store on your left on the road to Rocky Point, right after the junction. It has great prices and great arts, crafts, mesquite and the
least expensive liquor prices all around. You'll find arts from all over the Country, including great furniture, mostly at reasonable prices.
You do not want to travel on the Mexican side on MX 2ed. You'd first have to drive the Rumarosa from Tecate, to Mexicali, to San Luis, and then the
long, narrow, desolate, heavy truck travel road to Sonoita to the Rocky Point turnoff. This is a longer trip than going up to the I-8, and turning
off at Gila Bend, no need to go to Tucson.
Once you get to Sonoita, it's 63 miles in to Rocky Point, good road.
It's a crazy, crazy party place. Had a home in Choya Bay from '63 to '85. It's just a 3 hr. trip from Phoenix or Tucson, so we made the trip each
weekend, when we were crazy too! Fun times for awhile -- now we love the quiet South Campos of San Felipe, until it happens here.

It is now possible to get to Rocky Point through El Golfo de Sta. Clara. It is not yet paved all the way but the dirt part is graded and does not
require 4wd. If you have plenty of time and enjoy scenery without heavy traffic, you can go from Ensenada through V. Trinidad to Mex 5 above San
Felipe, then East on 4, down through Riito to El Golfo to center of town then take the cemetery road East until you hook up with the new paved
"Costera" to RP. I agree that I don't much care for the town itself, but Cholla Bay is still nice.wornout - 7-24-2007 at 07:24 PM
Thanks for the update Oso, I wondered if that road was done yet. A group of us went to El Golfo two years ago and if I were going from Ensenada to
Rocky Point, I would definitely go the route you mentioned. The back roads from SF/ Mexicali 5, on Hwy 4 and south on the El Golfo road are great.
And the main reason I would go through El Golfo is to stay at Las Concha's Hotel on the water and have another Sweet & Sour Shrimp plate.

The road paving started from the other end at Peñasco and might have been finished by now if not for the dispute over the toll bridge revenues at San
Luis Rio Colorado. The city claims it and wants the money to stay here. The governor says it belongs to the state and wants it sent to Hermosillo.
The city refused and the guv retaliated by holding up progress on the road. I'm not sure where things stand just now. A lot of locals have decals on

Rocky Point is in the Frontera - no auto paper zone. Auto import papers are issued at Caborca (sp) on Mex 15.Oso - 7-25-2007 at 05:14 PM
