road to punta san carlos

I am planning a trip down to punta san carlos via punta baja.
I would like to know if I should take my lifted f-250 4x4 with a full size camper. This rig is a little top heavy and I hate to have to turn back. Plus any fishin info would help. I plan on throwing plastics and krocks and a arsenal of other tackle. I'll have my kayak.

last time down that road it was dam bumpy and sections were very silty. you must be a wind surfer as this place is a wind hole. allso i have never had reel good fishing there because the water was allways dirty, thou other friends have . prefer canoas south but good luck.

Thanks for the reply steve. No I'm not a wind surfer and as a fisherman the wind would suck. I only have 4 1/2 days in august and I thought I'd check out this area. I'll see what others have to say and give it some more thought.

You should have no problem getting there in your rig as long as it's not right after a big rain. (Occassionally the road gets rutted or washed out after big rains.)
It's been done many times in 2wd vans and whatever else might hold surfing/windsurfing gear.
Don't forget to bring 2 half sheets (2x8) of plywood to put on the upwind side of your rig if the wind is blowing; stops the sand from blowing through.

Thanks diver, I can get in the camper to get out of the wind. Wind and flys are the reason I started useing a camper besides being more mobile. What's the chances of little or no wind in august in the punta baja/san carlos area?

August is not a time of normally high winds.
I'd be ready for 10-15 in the afternoon.
You should be fine unless a front comes through.

Been going there for 20 years....SELDOM will there be little or no wind.....when it stops blowing it is really nice....I will probably be down there this weekend via the inland route.....

Thanks for the info and the weather site. I think I can make it work. There looks like a lot of stucture in the area that would hold fish. Calico's, sandbass maybe some Butt's as long as the gillnets haven't been in the area for awhile.

We hit one of those SELDOMs on a one week spring windsurfing trip a few years back. Thank goodness we had enough tequila and a few longboards for surfing !!
Another spring trip, we were sooo tired from windsurfing 8 days straight and the sand was in everything, no matter what we tried.

I've had a "couple" of calm days over the years and the usual...."it's been calm the last 2 weeks" stories have filled my ears.....I don't wind surf so calm day is blessing to me.....

Steve if your worried about the road along the beach I would suggest taking the turn off 1 just down past El Rosario,looks like about 40 miles then a few past El Progreso,much firmer.

Thanks guys for all the great info.

It's my plan to drive from punta baja down to san carlos and check out all the spots and work my way back staying at the nicest ones. The real concern I had was that the road would get off camber and have the truck flop on its side . My truck is very tall and I've had the pucker factor make me turn around before. The soft areas shouldn't be as much of a problem with the 12.5"/36" BFG all terrains aired down , Knock on wood!

as i remember thers no real off camber spots but then again i did have a few beers in me. dont forget to fish punta fernando on your yak, the place look real fishy!!!:coolup:

Well Steve, you're in luck if you haven't left already. We're just back from there and the trail from Punta Baja to San Carlos is a real cool adventure. We did it in 2 hours or so in my Bronco prerunner.

The trail info David K posts on his site is excellent. I logged the waypoints into my GPS and it was a piece of cake. If you aren't a navigator, then his verbal discriptions and directions will get you there. Plan on a few miss-directions as he doesn't have all the forks in the road called out for sure. Just keep the coast on your right and you'll be fine.

South of Punta San Antonio I would suggest that you make for the more inland trail as the near coast route is in alot of vados and gullies and does get off camber and soft in some places. The main route is pretty well traveled with the locals so if you have an issue you will get discovered. It is fairly rocky in some areas especially on the main road out to the highway, but not the sharp gravel like the Gonzaga road, but more smooth, round rocks which made it real intersting at times for us at speed in the prerunner. Be sure your tires and shocks are in perfect shape and carry 2 spare tires.

Like Gadget,I just returned from that zone myself..

The normal San Carlos road south of El Rosario is in the best shape in years..we took that in last sunday.We took the road out to Pta Baja on thursday at a very leasurly pace..Looking a t all the little beaches along the way. Love that drive..some heavy washboard in places but overall no problem..we took about four hours. wish iwas there now.

the bay at San Carlos was ALIVE!! I wasn't fishin but the bait was going NUTS..The pascaderos said it was just "chiles" feeding on small anchovie..(still not sure what a "chile" is)....I never saw big boils in the bait but, GOTTA be something around there...We had four days of no wind and tropical conditions(dumb luck!)..kayak and a rubba dub would have been fun!Good luck!

Just returned also....road from highway is best ever....fishing for "chiles" was crazy...every cast was catch...got tired of reeling them in.....

Thomas T....was that you flashing lights as we drove down hwy 1 somewhere around san quentin(?)

Don't know...asked the guy (rodney) who works at Solo and he said that is what they call them.....

they are about 10-12 " long...sleek....very agressive ...small mouth ...slight yellow(?) color on side fins near gills.....

not good to eat....

Chile = lizardfish

That is according to Bill Mathias, author of DICTIONARY OF SPORTFISHING English-Spanish (and my neighbor in Oro Valley)....

He was written up in WON as the Roosterfish (pez gallo) catch and release king a few years ago...
