A new venue for aficionados of the beautiful game: Superliga

Propelled mainly by L.A. Galaxy's acquisition of David Beckham, later tonight LAG will go against Pachuca (de mi vieja's tierra)

Right now F.C. Dallas is taking on my #1 favorite team.

Pues, soy Chiva y que?

Oso..........

Do you think Beckham can do what Pele couldn't? That is, develop an interest in U.S. soccer/futbol? He has his work cut out for him.

Yeah, and his babe with the "bolt-ons" does not inspire greatness either.

L.A.- you get what you deserve...

The interest is coming with or without Beckham. The reason is that a great many more kids have been playing than used to be. Most gringos my age and older never played soccer and find the low scoring to be boring. When I was in high school, our coach devoted ONE DAY to soccer by dividing gym class into two teams, putting a basketball in the middle of the football field and instructing us to try to kick it past the opposing goalpost. The rules? No hands. That was it. No designated goalies. No further explanations and he never did it again. If I hadn't gone to Mexico at a fairly young age, I probably wouldn't be into it now.

This has all changed in the last generation or so thanks to the "Soccer Moms". Frankly, I think Beckham is overrated and past his prime. We have people like Donovan now who are just as good, maybe better.

Chivas= Club Atletico de Guadalajara- The Striped Goats, Chivas Rayadas, of Guadalajara AKA El Rebaņo Sagrado, the sacred flock.

The Superliga is composed of Pro teams from U.S. and Mexico.

The problem isn't interest, it's marketing. The US media has yet to figure out how to make money from soccer. No time outs combined with competition from football, baseball and basketball. It will take rules changes to help soccer compete. It'll come because US football is making inroads in Latin America, the Orient and Europe. More competition will mean less revenue for soccer. They'll fix it.
