Baja Dreamin'

Osprey - 7-27-2007 at 07:04 PM

Like the Wall Street journalist I’m qualified to take you along on a purely heuristic fieldtrip into parallel worlds along the border. Imagine, if you will, that there exists a parallel BajaNomad board for those (mostly) Mexicans who cross the border not to work, but to play. I’ll call the site Vagabundos de California.

Board members would be registering to read, lurk, post about good places to camp, fish, eat in California and Arizona (a few posts about Texas I’m sure). There they find a home for questions about road conditions, emergency services, fishing, hunting, etc. They would undoubtedly share heartwarming stories about people they have met at Big Bear, some one who might have helped them fix a vehicle problem while camped at Yellowstone, tempt your taste buds with tales of recipes for spicy jerky learned from Sourdough Sams around Death Valley.

There would be those who might find fault with being inconvenienced at the border and elsewhere --- people might rail against real or imagined profiling, bias, offensive security operations. Surely politics would play a part and the board would need an appropriate political venue for open but separate Non- Travel discussions.

I can imagine the board might be populated by Juancals, San Diego Diego, Arimex, Hola la Jolla, Chula Vista Chuy………… a name to match the many Nomads. Take the journey, walk in their zapatas, imagine just what subjects might bring the most hits, the most contention, the most humor.

I’ll likely miss a little sleep tonight (nothing better to do that late at night) and I’ll do it with delight as I run through the list of Nomads, change their names and outlook with the shoe on the other foot.

Osprey - 7-29-2007 at 09:27 AM

I was hopin' Nomads would be dreamin' up parallel names for the Mexican board: Calbound, LAron, Newportgirl, Señor Guillermo, Cal Cat, Oxnard dreamer, Yumalover, Quartziter, etc........

Paula - 7-29-2007 at 03:03 PM

With my bilingual name I'll just be Paula on the new board. Just pronounce it differently, please. I will however change my location to Kalispell Montana.

So now that I'm up here in the north, can anyone tell me just WHY they call this place Kalispell?:lol:

OK, I'll play:

Paoolah
Texmexray
Orangegrover
Kerifornia
Iflydaplane
San Bernie Dino
Sally North
the borderrunner
Arizalera
Ken Cookemunga
San Hose A
Hollywoody

Hey, it ain't my fault........Blame Osprey. It's his dream (and your nightmare)

Toneart, you da man! Love those handles. Fernando posted a link to Vox Populi, a Spanish chat board --- it's a broader cafeteria of topics (not really travel related totally) but I liked the fact that they have a topic corner for Prose and Poetry (also one about sex).

We will dream but stay focused -- Viva Baja

I was just thinking that a lot of Mexican vacationers might ask questions about the best places to look for key lime pie, pancakes, hush puppies and rollercoasters, redfish and micro breweries.

Shoot Osprey, lets take it one step further and do the "questionable legal status immigrant" board and talk about where are the best holes in the fence, which border guards are prone to shooting you in the butt, where you can expect to find a job and who is hiring, the location and presence of the "Minutemen", and all kinds of useful and detailed information.
I would especially like the rant and rave section where everyone gets a chance to be really critical of political and govenmental issues and talks about "The better way".

Great idea! Knowing the U.S. intelligence community would be monitoring the board it would be fun to let them in on some misinfo. For example one could start a thread about the possibility of clever Mexicans crossing the border as legal terrorists -- with attorneys strapped to their chests.

Good board name then could be "Coyote Feo".

:lol::lol::lol:

I too, tend to feel suicidal whenever I have attorneys strapped to my chest. From my chest, it's just a short reach to my wallet.
Here's a disclaimer.....just to be clear......I am not a terrorist!

Posts on the reverse Nomad board:

1. Do they take pesos on the 73 tollroad?

2. Is it true you can camp in any Walmart parking lot for free?

3. It's 130° on my porch in Blythe !

4. Favorite restaurant- the SIP & CHEW PATY-U at the glorieta de Long Beach

5. Is is true about this 9-1-1 ? If you have an emergency and call
9-1-1, the policia will come and help you and you don't have to pay them gas money ??

6. How I smuggle crooked 2x4's from the Ensenada Home Depot in to Yuma...

bajadock - 7-30-2007 at 08:45 PM

From "Jaime' Alta":
Too many choices in Home Depots and Lowes in Alta California. Just got back from Home Depot/Ensenada tonight. How come there is no bacon-wrapped hot dog vendor outside H.D.E.???

Just when it's gettin' good..... On the serious side for a moment -- not many Mexican families around here have the opportunity to travel so my premise is a stretch for people I know. I took some Mexican pals from East Cape on a camping/fishing trip to Concepcion and they were blown away. It is very difficult to explain just what lies out there -- for many their worlds are here, now, work, sweat, start over. I try, when I can to expose my friends through books, photos, the internet, to that "other world" out there. They, likewise have shown me things around these parts I would not have found on my own. From time to time they put me on a little. Couple of em keep promising to show me the "Arbol Extrana", a one-only-on-the-planet tree up a secret canyon.
