Baja 7-07 Part 4: San Roque, Abreojos & Campo Rene

David K - 8-2-2007 at 08:54 AM

We drive to Shari's place Wednesday morning. Shari tells us Roy (The Squarecircle) headed home earlier. Some good breakfast is made for us and then she hops in the Tacoma to show us San Roque!

Here is the blowhole just below Shari & Juan's place...

I's a small world in Baja when a red pickup passes us on the road to La Roca, and stops.. backs up... It's Dern and Paulina ('P')!!!

They were checking out the Vizcaino Peninsula and we just happened to meet on the same road!

Dern, Elizabeth, Shari and Paulina...

San Roque is 7.8 easy miles from Bahia Asuncion... The road to San Roque turns off the main street in Asuncion by the police station (delegacion) on Curvina street.

San Roque was abandoned when modern services arrived at Asuncion. The fisherman still launch their boats from there, however... The area is rumored to be haunted... Ghosts from pirate days, Shari tells us!

Cool place to be buried huh! So um...as you can see...we have spoiled the beach by telling Nomads about it...packed as usual...can hardly find a spot to put my umbrella! NOT! And the bloody traffic jams in san roque will drive ya nuts. Funny thing is, the day we went our kayak fishing buddies were at our little beach cabin in san roque and another nomad was camped so yeah, it seemed packed! HA!

David K - 8-2-2007 at 09:22 AM

It was great... Thanks Shari! Next Shari made all of us fish tacos from that yellowtail... Great stuff, Baja style!

The next morning (Thursday 7-26-07) we were off to continue our Baja vacation...

Thanks mucho to Shari and Juan for their hospitality!

Between Asuncion and Punta Prieta was miles of beautiful beach with piles of polished clam shell pieces...

The road from Asuncion to Abreojos was mostly good driving... There were parallel graded roads in many places. We stayed closer to the beach using the older route where possible. Here we near La Bocana...

La Bocana (52 miles and 2 hours from Asuncion) had a paved main street...

are those mexican chopsticks ???

David K - 8-2-2007 at 09:47 AM

As we used the older, coastal graded road, when we left La Bocana we came out to the newer route which was well signed...

David K - 8-2-2007 at 09:51 AM

Not far from La Bocana we spotted a road onto the salt flats next to the long La Bocana lagoon. As it was a quarter moon, the tides were not flooding the flats and that made for fast, smooth drive.

Here is the lagoon...

We drove around Abreojos hoping to find Fishin' Rich or other Nomads without luck (it's a big place)... Then we drove out to the point where people camp and are some beach homes...

Abreojos was 63 miles from Asuncion and took us 2 hours and 15 minutes (with stops).

12 miles from Abreojos, on a side road is Campo Rene on the Estero el Coyote... Restaurant, cabins, camping, airport...

Back out to the main road (2.8 miles from Rene) then turn north for San Ignacio... 5.1 miles later we come to the new pavement! That means pavement is about 10 miles from reaching Abreojos.

Last photo for Part 4... The Sierra Santa Clara... Home of a lost mission!

We next go to San Ignacio and tour the mission, museum and town before continuing to the Sea of Cortez and some warm water!

Stay tuned!!!

Great report, I'm heading down on sun 8/5 so it's nice to get a preview of the area, thanks.

Bob H - 8-2-2007 at 10:29 AM

David, this is the exact same route we want to take in October on our way to Mulege. Will the cabover camper rig fare well on these dirt roads?
Great photo-essay. Love it.

David K. Thanks for the pictures.:bounce: Good luck to you and your Lady as you continue to explore Baja. :bounce:

Thanks for the report and the pictures, David. I like the detailed to-from distances you give...........sorry if others are offended by it but, hey, it's all on a AAA map, for crying out loud.

One error in description, if I understand you correctly. On the text with the first shot of Campo Renee, it says Asuncion. I think you meant Abreojos.

capt. mike - 8-2-2007 at 11:03 AM

good shots DK.
it has been 24 years since i landed at campo Rene. i see its changed a lot.
the WX report another thread sure is inviting!
can you give us a pirep on the airstrip's condition there from your visit's perspective? were any planes there during your drive thru?

any campers? i think a tent and basics would be fine, skip the cabins.

jorgie - 8-2-2007 at 12:02 PM

methinks they get Nomad of the year awards. David, thank you. From my first question to you, throught, you have been there and now you have enabled the west coast. Well done. I hope you will be able to put it on a disk , available to all. A really great trip and report.

Crusoe - 8-2-2007 at 04:53 PM

Nice trip report David. Thank you. Its nice to see that things are not changing to fast on that section of the coast, as yet. ++C++

msteve1014 - 8-2-2007 at 06:35 PM

Bob H , you can drive that road, no problem, just a little slower than David. I was there at that time in an overloaded pickup with camper, boat, trailbike, kitchen sink......all of it. Mike

Yes, the road is solid and wide all the way (2WD)... no serious grades. As you will be in a camper, you will need to go much slower... and that will make the drive seem long and lonely for the distances between towns. The beach is not that close to the newer graded road, which is probably the one you will use... But if you see a place to go over and check the coast as we did, it will be a nice break in the drive... specially the coast between Asuncion and Punta Prieta, closer to Punta Prieta.

Hi Capt. Mike... no planes but the runway looked fantastic and they are geared for pilot guests! There were people in at least one cabin and about 4 palapa campers... The place was very clean and inviting!

Thanks David.........

and thanks to all who bring trip reports, pictures and the like right to my living room. It eases the pain of living 2,500 or so miles away from the border.

David K - 8-2-2007 at 10:09 PM

Yes, Baja trip reports are the next best thing to being there!

Part 5 (San Ignacio, Santa Rosalia, Mulege, El Requeson) is now posted at: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=26056

Thanks for sharing this Baja adventure. I had considered the Asuncion/Abreajos run in our motor home, but chickened out. Nice to see it can be done!

Hi David,

We'll be at Shari's in less than two weeks and we will be riding our quads down to Abreojos and Campo Rene's from Bahia Asuncion. I see you took photos of Campo Rene, was the restaraunt open or do you have any other reccomendations for lunch in that area?

Thanks

great photos, great trip...

Next year will be an off-roading trip from Santa Catarina to Santa Rosalallita, then down to Shari's.
