Marco Antonio's Ensenada - Possibly the Best Fish Taco You'll Ever Eat!

bajabound2005 - 8-2-2007 at 05:47 PM

This place was a real find! Not your average fish taco. First, nothing is fried! Secondly, the fish choices are tuna or salmon! The fish is steamed with wine and herbs. There is also atun machaca tacos and atun machaca empanadas. There is soup on the menu as well. The salmon taco was $1.70 and the tuna, if I remember correctly was $1.20. One is ample for a meal. Lots of fish and the tortillas are bigger than I've seen on your regular Baja fish taco. Toppings included several types of onion (marinated, mixed with other things), quacamole, crema, lime, and a few other salsas. You wouldn't want to insult these gems with shredded cabbage! You'll want to make every effort to find this place if visiting, living in or passing through Ensenada. Located on Rayon between 3rd and 4th. It's pretty much a residential neighborhood.

Bajabound2005,
Your restaurant and food reviews are giving me heartburn over my recent hire of Cali Cucaracha as my restaurant editor. However, I was forced to hire a minority/endangered species combo. With the right sauce, that sounds like a great special.

No question, the absolute best!

UPDATE! For the past week we've been salivating at the idea of getting back to Marco Antonio's yesterday on our way to the Valle de Guadalupe. We arrived at Marco's at about 1:10 and he says, "You're too late, all sold out". AGGGGHHHHH! So their normal hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the rule is, by 1:00 everything is GONE! Open Monday thru Saturday.

Oh yes, definately a "go back" especially with some friends (to show'em yet another great taco place you found)! I noticed that my atun taco definately had more fish in it than the salmon taco which meant the atun had way too much in it for $1.20! haha Will need to try a cup of their soup next time. Oh yes, make sure you get a couple of their homemade cookies to munch on as you're driving home. Don't have any idea what they had in'em but they were good. Hours are 9 AM to 1 PM! Street parking was available too.

Oh! I forgot about the cookies! 3 to a pkg and guess what? There were 3 of us! Perfect. We are guessing here, but an oatmeal base with dried cranberries. The cookies were skinny (GOOD THING AFTER THOSE TACOS) but 3 cookies and 3 persons....that was a perfect dessert, even if it was well before noon.....!:)

What part of town is this?
Close to what?

Just out of curiosity. I refrained from serving salmon on my menu this last year. The reasons were two, waytoooo expensive(wholesale) and it was a crappy season(give em a rest).
I guess my big question is where that salmon is coming from. Maybe I should look south. Could it be farmed. No offense and I'd like to try the place but it just strikes me odd they serve salmon. No fried fish. That's for us, thanks.

C'mon, Sharks, it's gotta be farmed raised Atlantic Salmon.

Prolly getting it from the Ensenada Costco..............

You got it right Hook, Costco Ensenada! Though I understand the atun comes from stock caught here in Baja waters. Plus (IMO) you get more fish on a atun taco than you do on the salmon taco and the price is cheaper for the atun too.

And they really know what to do with tuna, given their history. The salmon is OK but doesn't touch the tuna machaca (taco or empanada).

Must have been too busy salivating, thinking about these taco's and missed that !
Cheers !

Remember, Roasty, they CLOSE at 1 PM not AM and we suggest getting there around 11:00 AM for the best selection. And DO get those cookies at the cash register!
