Free PC down loads.

I have a Mac but can run Windows XP too. Are there sites for free software downloads for the PC's ? I would like to have some reason play on the windows part and learn how to work the damn thing like most of you.
Also click on the site below. We really need more of you to post something there. It's fun! Russ

Thanks Woody. Don't know why I didn't try that first. CRS

HashHu has a ton of programs to download, and the cracks to make them run.

It depends on what kind of programs you are looking for. Wide variety available.

However, take care with some sources, you can easily get a virus or trojan horse from some of those innocuous looking programs.

Like the lab Russ!

Even better that tucows, www.sourceforge.net . A lot of the stuff there is fairly specialized (technical), but there's a ton and a lot of good quality.

Thanks Ron. That's only the garage/Casita. Ran out of $$ so I live in the Casita for now. But it is fine for me and Mason (the Lab). Thanks everyone. I have enough sites now to start some serious frustration on the PC.

Freeware/Shareware

MrBillM - 8-4-2007 at 09:26 AM

Another site is: http://www.majorgeeks.com

Good selection of Freeware and Shareware. Much of the Shareware will function without payment for an unlimited time. I've got one program on my oldest computer in use that is on "Day 1121" of my 30-day trial.

bajalou - 8-4-2007 at 09:34 AM

Kim Komando's site has lots of stuff - freeware, shareware, etc. sorted by type. One thing I like about her links is that they have been checked and are pretty safe from virus, spamy stuff etc.

Ron,
Yep, Big Boathouse but the garage/casita is only 30x30 so the casita is only 15x30. Works for me though. Lots of storage.

Discussion last night on "geekdom" and how inexperienced the over 50 set (hey, that includes me)has with computers. I'm too independant, but, there are many forums available for PC's, software. Or JUSTDOIT!

Russ, nice spot, thanks for pix. "only 30 x 30". When you've got a view like yours, what else do you need other than frig, stove, bed and plumbing facility?

Russ - 8-4-2007 at 10:20 AM

Yep, got it all. But no desal plant. And no AC but the fan works pretty well.

Just 'cause it's a PC doesn't mean you need to run Windows. Microsoft has got a serious problem right now with their newest operating system, Vista. People are slowly switching back to Win XP or W2K - or finding out about the excellent Linux desktop distros now available...

Wouldn't surprise me to see more movement to the Linux desktop based upon the situation at hand today. My 69 year-old mother and father have had no problem whatsoever in transitioning from Windows to using PCLinuxOS2007 on the new systems I set them up on:
http://www.pclinuxos.com

PCLinuxOS' slogan is "Radically Simple".

Another huge community favorite for newer systems (maybe even more popular than PCLinuxOS) is Ubuntu:
http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/desktopedition

These two desktop systems - in my opinion - currently put Windows to shame.

For older systems, I'm playing around with some other favorites that have little to no "bloat":

For systems with 192MB or more of RAM, consider Sam Linux, which is developed on the roots of PCLinuxOS:
http://sam.hipsurfer.com

And for older systems with hopefully somewhere in the neighborhood of 128MB of RAM:
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org (least bloat, techie oriented)
http://www.puppylinux.org (more features, easier Windows transition)

Gravy:

- These operating systems are all free.

- Little to worry about at the moment regarding being attacked with viruses, etc.

- If you have a cd-burner, you can download a disk image you can burn and boot your Windows system from that will run each of these operating system live from CD (& RAM). They won't touch your hard drive, and you can fully demo each o/s.

I realize this may not help you with your Mac, but thought the information considerably worthwhile.

Curious where you got that information. I am running it on two machines and the only problem I have is with running iTunes (Apple software):lol:

The problem that I'm observing is that people are switching back, not necessarily the O/S itself.

My understanding is that the main issues are:
- Hardware driver issues.
- The required hardware specs to run the O/S.

This information is directly from multiple computer IT service professionals I work with in the San Diego area based upon the support issues their business clients are calling them out for.

With the Linux systems, it's my wild guess that the incredible growth in their adoption right now is two-fold... the increased quality of these distributions, and the current Windows o/s "situation".

I was hoping this thread would be helpful for everyone. After checking out all this info I'm a bit overwhelmed so I'll play on what comes easy (to me) and play in the Mac for awhile. Then go over to the funny system Windows not Linux. Jeeze.... I just wanted to know what time it is.

Yes, third party hardware drivers are (as usual) slow in coming. That's one of the reasons I choose mainstream hardware for my machines. As a software development professional, I can't afford to be behind as I often develop stuff for new versions of Windows and other apps well before they are released.

Hardware specs are another issue - they really only come up if you want to do the fancy graphics, the core system really doesn't need more than XP, unless you were underpowered on XP, of course.

But Vista has been, on the whole MUCH more stable than XP, and it's support for laptops, mobile devices and Media Center is outstanding.

Now its 9:29:33 on a thread that has completely been taken over by operating system techies.

But now you know how to build a watch Russ!

Important: Re; Letter sent to tech support regarding instaled program

fdt - 8-5-2007 at 10:43 AM

Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0. I soon noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources. In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and now monitors all other system activity. Applications such as Poker Night 10.3, Football 5.0, Hunting and Fishing 7.5, and Racing 3.6 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected.

I can't seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run my favorite applications. I'm thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but the uninstall doesn't work on Wife 1.0. Please help!

Thanks,
A Troubled User.

Dear Troubled User:

This is a very common problem that men complain about.

Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its Creator to run EVERYTHING!!! It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0. It is impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system once installed.

You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed to not allow this. Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under
Warnings-Alimony/Child!Support. I recommend that you keep Wife1.0 and work on improving the situation. I suggest installing the background application "Yes Dear" to alleviate software augmentation.

The best course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE because ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the system will return to normal anyway.

Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to be very high maintenance. Wife 1.0 comes with several support programs, such as Clean and Sweep 3.0, Cook It 1.5 and Do Bills 4.2.

However, be very careful how you use these programs. Improper use will cause the system to launch the program Nag Nag 9.5. Once this happens, the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase additional software. I recommend Flowers 2.1 and Diamonds 5.0 !

WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Secretary With Short Skirt 3.3. This application is not supported by Wife 1.0 and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system.

Best of luck,
Tech Support
