windows closing mysteriously

oldhippie - 8-6-2007 at 02:46 PM

Too many times I'll be writing a post and after I've spent considerable time the window just closes and eveything is gone.

Anybody else seen this or do I have a flakey Sony Vaio?

or is it real time censorship and the moderators are doing their thing? Just kidding.

That my friend is why I gave up long-winded posts.

DENNIS - 8-6-2007 at 02:51 PM

The right wing Windows gods are reading what you're writing.

comitan - 8-6-2007 at 02:52 PM

Hippie

When this happens to me, I just assume its a post I'm not suppose to be making so I just don't post it.:lol:

oldhippie - 8-6-2007 at 02:55 PM

but it does happen to others?

woody with a view - 8-6-2007 at 02:55 PM

i've had it happen a couple of times and have narrowed it down to inadvertantly (sp?) hitting one of the keys to the right of the "space" bar, i think!

on second thought I'll take that last line out. That's the one you can't see now.

Hook - 8-6-2007 at 03:09 PM

I've never had that happen without being able to point to an accidentaly key stroke.

If I have something that is long or I have to walk away from, I will copy and paste it into a Word doc, just in case.

oldhippie - 8-6-2007 at 03:20 PM

An accidental keystroke shouldn't close a window.

So it is the software. Too bad, because aside from this rather major problem, this is the best message board software I've used.

losfrailes - 8-6-2007 at 03:39 PM

If you are on a laptop, check your battery level.

If the system is still up, you should try to reload the proggy you are using for the long worded post.

Now I put this post on this thread mainly to see how many egsperts will come on to contradict or confuse this person. I have a standing bet on the number. Its high. Please don't make me lose my bet!

I see public apologies do nothing

The Gull - 8-6-2007 at 03:47 PM

but give the apologizer a temporary forum from which to appear have integrity, when in fact it is a sham.

Can't seem to let go...huh guys?

You're right, I misspoke. But F5 will reload the existing page and if you are using a reply window, it will wipe it clean.

That is one thing about this software that disappoints me, if it is, indeed, the software and not just a setting in my browser. You cant go "back" and then "forward" and not lose typed material. I USUALLY copy it to the clipboard but sometimes I forget.

joel - 8-6-2007 at 05:05 PM

It depends on what browser you are using. I use Firefox. Control-W will close the window in Firefox.

joel - 8-6-2007 at 05:07 PM

.... and Control-R reloads the window. There are a few pitfalls, apparently -- at least in Firefox. I suspect IE is similar.

Like someone is reading it over your shoulder while you're typing and decides it shouldn't be posted and wipes it out.:lol: Frustrating when that happens:fire::fire:

If you're using IE, try Alt+F4.

Software, referring to like your browser software... not this site's forum software.

I think you noted previously your familiarity with the various site scripting languages.

As such, I'll offer this as a reminder... Javascript client-side language can only close a window that it opened to begin with. Otherwise, you'll get an error message that the script is trying to close the browser window (at least in IE - I haven't tried this with Firefox or SeaMonkey browsers yet - which are two others I use recently, both based on Mozilla platform. Netscape's early versions had warnings).

To the best of my knowledge, the XMB Forum software does not close any popups it creates (like u2u).

This has to do with passing information from one page to the next and (I believe possibly) caching choices the software is set to (something that's fixed in, not optional). Generally this will be outside of settings in your browser.

Hippie...there are many keys like Esc and combinations of keys that will reload or open many menus...draging your thumb across the mouse pad when hitting a letter key will often do crazy things...
First turn down the sensitivity of you mouse pad...that will solve 50%.
I do not know all the ways...everytime I turn around...there is a new scenario.
Another thing is work in a minimize window a keep your cursor off the page...I often find myself typing in the middle of a paragraph...when I forget to get my cursor out of the way.
The other answer for me is to do my writing at Gmail...all the benefits of word and auto save. It really helps when I have to stop for awhile.

toneart - 8-6-2007 at 07:25 PM

Yes, it has happened to me quite often when I am typing a windy post in BN. I use Firefox and assume it is a glitch within Firefox. This happens both on my PC desktop and my MAC laptop. It first gives a pop up box that says that (I am only pulling this from memory now): an error has occured and Firefox has to close. It then gives you the option to report the error to MS. I now always decline this option because nothing has ever come of reporting it. Next, pop up window gives you the option to return to the session you were working on or starting a new session. To my amazement, the post that I was in the middle of writing reappears, so nothing lost.

Firefox is just a better user experience than IE.

oldhippie - 8-6-2007 at 08:13 PM

Thanks for the replies. Two simultaneous keystokes will do a lot of things but they are not accidental.

The window closes when I'm using the mouse pad. And it never happens on any other website or with any standalone software. So I doubt it's my computer and I doubt it's the client (browser) software. Could be a combination I suppose.

It is the Quick Reply window. It's like a submit with no post variables.

Los Frailes, are you tlaking about proggy fonts? Are they from my code text editor?

One other possibility is that your mouse pad has some shortcuts on it (if I tap mine in the top left corner) that close the window or make the browser go "back." If I tap on my top right corner it goes forward.

You should check the settings on the notebook's mousepad preferences and see what shortcuts are set.

AmoPescar - 8-6-2007 at 10:11 PM

OLD HIPPIE,

I've not had it happen to me that I remember (I use IE).

But for longer postings, I always write them in Word and then copy and paste them. That allows me to spell check, save it, stop and restart, etc. When adding pictures, I add the URL into the story before pasting to Nomad.

oldhippie - 9-8-2007 at 08:40 PM

Just happened again tonight. I'm using IE7 and the bajanomad tab closed while writing a post. Poof, gone. I was high-lighting a sentence to move it and while in the high-lighting process, dragging the cursor using the mousepad, the tab closed. I had four tabs open to four different websites. The others did not close.

I know IE has a bad CSS implementation, does this website use CSS heavily?

P.S. It was exactly as though I used the Ctrl-W keyboard shortcut.

oldhippie - 9-8-2007 at 09:24 PM

No, neither has it happened on another website nor running other apps. But it's my kitchen laptop, an old VAIO, top shelf in its day, someday I'll have to get the chips and salsa out of the keyboard.

No big deal, just wondering if it is happening to others too.

If no one else is seeing it, then maybe I have a flakey mousepad.

Fully updated XP Home edition.

woody with a view - 9-8-2007 at 10:21 PM

this means nothing in the scheme of the world, but it ****** me off to no end!

seems whilst typing on nomad i will try to flex a third or fouth digit on my left hand and since it is not a well co-ordinated maneuver sometimes (when a window closes mysteriously) i'm in the midst of a semi thought-out reply,,,,,my window reloads........it's enough to make a grown man get up from the keyboard and drain his main vein, to make his bladder gladder......SABE'??????

Taco de Baja - 9-9-2007 at 10:25 AM

Had it happen several times. I think it happens when trying to capitalize a letter and hitting "Ctrl" instead of "Shift" by accident.

Ctrl-w will close explorer. Ctrl-R will reload the page with the post gone, apparently forever. There are probably other Ctrl-(Letter) combinations that will do unintended things as well.....Those are simply two I know about.

I have taken to writing any long posts in Word first and then copying to BN.

Bob and Susan - 9-9-2007 at 11:21 AM

i think you have a corrupt windows file
it probably happened in an automatic windows update

go back to a day that it wasn't happening and
do a mirror back up for THAT day...
it's in your windows utility

then when windows updates
it will up to date to the correct version

Phil S - 9-9-2007 at 11:55 AM

It's happened to me numerous times, and frustrating is an understatement!!!! It usually happens when the 'fingers' get ahead of the brain. Then I suddenly realized that it didn't completely disappear, but ended up "going down to the bottom' for some reason. Now I look there first before starting over again. One of lifes 'little mysteries' that I experience everytime I sit down with my computer.

Debra - 9-9-2007 at 06:03 PM

Mike Humfreville told me that is why he always put his stuff on Windows Word then posted it.

We all know how long winded he could be (Mike's words, and I agree), I always printed out his posts of interest so I could read them in bed (like a novel) :lol:

When I saw the title of the thread I was going to suggest that you may have ghosts; but, since it is computer related.. you may have gremlins instead.

I've had it happen to me sometimes on my PC. For me, the main cause has been an accidental keystroke(s) somewhere near the right side of my spacebar as has been suggested here before.

I know it "shouldn't happen", but it does. I wouldn't rule it out so easily.

I am assuming that you have checked your computer for malware, etc..?

Otherwise.. save or "copy" long posts to your clipboard occasionally as a rudimentary backup.

oldhippie - 9-10-2007 at 10:34 AM

Yes, it's probably a combo of a sensitive mouse pad, which is the way I like it, and a smallish keyboard.

I was curious so I verified in a code editor the HTML page, the CSS, the embedded javascripts, and the .js file this website makes available. No big problems. Nicely hand crafted stuff, a little light on programmer comments. The </INPUT> tags are unusual. I'm going to use the bbcode javascripts.

I'm writing this in notepad.:)

BajaNomad - 11-2-2007 at 12:48 PM

Someone else was mentioning to me the Window closing by itself issue and pointing me back to this thread....

So, in looking up issues with Internet Explorer having windows closing themselves, it's likely caused by third-party software (say like Google or Yahoo toolbar, etc), or incompatibilities those are having, etc.

From another website:

Quote:

Use the usual methods to identify the third-party software that produces
your problem:

1. run IE with "No Add-Ons"
2. disable third-party extensions in Internet Options/Advanced
3. boot Windows in safe mode

If any or a combination of the above solves your problem there is
third-party software responsible for your problem.

If 1.: use Add-Ons-Manager and disable all non-Microsoft add-ons and
reenable them step-by-step until your problem comes back

If 2.: that's likely a toolbar or some other installable add-on

If 3.: that's likely a third-party software run from startup that can but
doesn't need to have "visible" connections to IE, for instance a so-called desktop search.

David K - 11-3-2007 at 08:41 AM

Happens at least once per session on Nomad... I will be reading or ready to post something and whooosh, Nomad is gone and my desktop is there... I just click Nomad on my browser and Nomad pops right back up... But this is a new issue that started happening in the past couple of months or so...
