SCUBA for old guys

CaboRon - 8-8-2007 at 02:29 PM

Always wanted to learn SCUBA .... Is there an age limit for learning ?

Any good schools in the La Paz area ?

Should I just stick to snorkeling ?

There is no age limit for anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And yes there are places in La Paz you can get certified. And before you jump off the end of the earth I will u2u since were are going to be neighbors.

Assuming you have no major medical complications, there is no age limit.
I think that scuba is a much better alternative for the aged diver as you can relax, no rush to clear your ears and much more opportunity to see the sites.
Try diving with a smaller tank like an aluminum 50 cf if you can't carry much weight. And for the really frail, try a compressor rig like a Brownies and you don't even have to carry a tank.

There are a lot of us old divers...and not just guys!!!! Just stay in shape! I think that learning to dive when you are older gives some real advantages...generally because of your life experience you don't find a need to do stupid risky things to prove how macho you are!

Do it, if you like snorkeling, you will love diving. After all, why just go window shopping when you can go into the store!

Exactly !!!

And before the free-diving purists chime in, I'll add that there is a definite advantage in some situations to be without those noisy bubbles. In order to successfully free dive to depths you need to be in shape and dive frequently. In the old days I could hang at 40' but now I can hardly bounce to 30'. I use a rebreather to get rid of the bubbles.

Ask Ken Bondy - he's WAY older than me !!

I have a card, but haven't dove in a few years. When you get down here, you can take lessons and I'll take a refresher course. You'll have a little company and we can compare aches afterwards.

Diving is good medicine for a broken heart!!!

Neither asthma nor heart problems (I don't know what a weak heart is) are absolute contraindications to diving...it's all about how it's controlled. If you have a question, the person to ask is your doctor.

Sounds great .... it's always good to have a study partner.
Speaking of aches, have you run into a good chiropractor in La Paz ?
