Saturday, we sadly had to head home... it would be nice to have Sunday to unpack, clean up, etc. but not sure if we could get from Concepcion Bay to
Oceanside, CA in one day's drive (without driving after dark south of El Rosario).
If we got too tired, then we could stop...
We were are packed up by 8 am (I think it was) and drove north to Mulege... AFTER one last swim in beautiful Concepcion Bay!!!
We went up to the mission in Mulege...
Founded in 1705, Mision Santa Rosalia de Mulege was the fourth mision in the Jesuit chain and operated for 123 years.
The stone mission church construction began in 1766 on this high bluff, safe from floods.

We had a great lunch at Ricardo's 'Rice and Beans' in San Ignacio (San Lino actually)... Fish tacos and carne asada tacos...
Next was the military check and right across from it was the roadside cafe that was used in the movie 'Bajo California: The Limit of Time'...

The Punta Abreojos highway junction is about 15 miles west of San Ignacio...
David K - 8-9-2007 at 06:33 PM
12 more miles up the highway is the well signed road to San Francisco de la Sierra, where the giant cave paintings are a mule ride away!
David K - 8-9-2007 at 06:36 PM
We drove into Guerrero Negro to have a look at the town and drove out the 6 mile causeway to the old salt loading warf... A few years after it was
built the salt loading was moved to a new facility in Scammon's Lagoon.

The eagle points the way ... north (I prefer it when we are heading south!!!)

Shari recommended we try this place in Jesus Maria, next to Carmelita's (both next to the Pemex station). It was GREAT!!!

We pulled into El Rosario as the sun was setting, had a great meal at Hugo's Tacos Mision (Hawaiian Patato and a giant burrito).
I had enough energy to continue on... we got to the border at 2 am and still had a 30 minute wait! Home at 3:30 am Sunday!
Well... what can I say... a great week+ in Baja!
Began with the Baja-Rosario Festival and party at Baja Cactus Motel... Fun times.
The Squarecircle traveled with us in the remote area between El Rosario and Guerrero Negro where we traveled 200 dirt road miles to get from north to
south (see Part 2) just like in the 'old days' of the Baja I remember!
Shari and Juan showed us a great time in their corner of Baja at Bahia Asuncion...
More dirt miles to Abreojos and Campo Rene to see new areas to me (and Baja Angel)!
The beauty of San Ignacio and Mulege really was a thrill to enjoy with Baja Angel.
Bahia Concepcion... what more can I say? It was all that I hoped it would be...
VIVA BAJA!!!

This is a "landmark" for us. We call it Monte Chi Chi. I don't know why. Pescador - 8-10-2007 at 06:28 AM
All I can say is Wow. I literally set there spell bound with all the descriptions and pictures. I am glad that everything went so smoothly and that
you guys had a great time. I go away filled and peaceful after reading the total report (unlike a couple of other threads going on at this time which
spew so much hatred and discontent) Thank you so much for spending the time to write and post and thanks in advance, cause I am going to reread all
this at least a few more times.Bob H - 8-10-2007 at 07:13 AM
David, this was fantastic.... some of our favorite spots in Baja Sur for sure. We are excited about our upcoming 20+/- days in Baja in October! Your

Hi Woody, yes Carmelita is a gem and I have always suggested people eat there. Heck there was a Viva Baja sticker on her van and there is now a 'got
baja?' sticker on the fridge in her new restaurant (both placed by fishin' rich I believe)... I was told someone else now makes the tamales and she
wasn't there when we ordered... but arrived when we were about done... as always full of smiles and kind wishes!
Not always hungry for tamales, the new place, next door has tortas and tacos and the owner's son is dating 'Serenita' (Shari's daughter)... also very
friendly... and it was good, too!
So, in Villa Jesus Maria: for tamales... see Carmelita's... For other things, try next door.BAJACAT - 8-12-2007 at 11:44 AM

It was a really nice trip... Did more driving than relaxing, but driving new (to me) dirt roads in Baja is fun!
We had a nice relax day at El Rosario, Bahia Asuncion and Bahia Concepcion. I have long wanted to drive along the distant Pacific (north of Guerrero
Negro, south of El Rosario) and out the Vizcaino Peninsula and both were achieved... I will go back out the Vizcaino to see Malarrimo Beach and Bahia
Tortugas some time in the future and return to Asuncion for some of that hospitality provided by Shari and Juan!BAJACAT - 8-13-2007 at 08:51 PM
