La Paz gets new English language bookstore

In a town where one can encounter a truck, a fire
blazing under its hood deliberately set in order to
grill up amazing barbequed hamburgers and where
reverse immigration is the norm, the one place that
does not exist is an English-language bookstore. La
Paz once had a store that catered
to foreigners by stocking a selection of titles in
English, but when the store changed hands recently,
the new owners left a void by discontinuing English
language book sales.

Allende Books is poised to fill the niche by bringing
an eclectic assortment of books to friends, neighbors
and visitors to La Paz.
Phyllis Patton and Diane Carmona invite you to visit
their digs on Allende Street between Madero and
Revolucion de 1910. "We started this whole thing
because of our love of reading" Diane shared over
coffee. "We started a book club a year ago and now we
have our own shop."'

Reflecting the diverse collection of genre carried by
Allende Books, the shop blazes with colors seemingly
chosen at random but somehow in a 'this is Mexico
way,’ works. In the window, one sees miniature
schoolroom chairs painted with bold colors, which
display children's' books when not being used for
story hour. "The children are being asked to learn
English without the benefit of hearing the spoken
word" Diane explained to me. "We will invite parents
to come by with their reading-age children to listen
as contemporary classic stories are read aloud by our
University-trained English language instructor." Along
the side walls are sections devoted to the Baja and
Mexico, cooking and decorating, art and artists and
the appreciation of local fish plants, and creatures.
Scattered throughout the store are fiction soft cover
titles and best-sellers. There is also a selection of
gently used books for sale” We have books coming in
from the mainland and from a handful of publishers
abroad so we will have new titles weekly" Phyllis
told me. "If you don't find the perfect book today,
there's always mañana."

For more information on children's' hour, the book
club or Allende Books, contact Phyllis Patton or
Diane Carmona at 612 125 91 14 by email at
allendebooks@prodigy.net.mx or by visiting the
bookstore two blocks off the Malecon on I. Allende
between Fco. Madero and Revolucion de 1910.

Felicidades!
