Hi nomads the beauty of living in San diego is that you can do quick Baja runs in a weekend and come back the same week.For example you c an do
G-canyon,Laguna Hanson,Valle de Guadalupe and the list goes on and on. This next weekend I will do a quick run to San Pedro Martir,it will be my firts
time.Right now Im thinking of the Menudo stand in San vicente,and the sautee clams in San Quintin. it's any body going to be around that part of Baja
next week..
The clock starts running right now can wait....

Hey enjoy-
I love SPM but the long border waits are making me think twice about weekend jaunts to Baja.
Instead, I usually head over to Anza Borrego or Mt. Laguna as I did this past weekend. But, I recently applied for a Sentri pass so.....

SPM is great in summer, but take a tent and rain gear, as this time of year (july-sept) you will get pretty frequent thunder storms (rarely last more
than an hour or two). if climbing peaks, suggest you start heading down when you see t-heads building - they build fast and take you by surprise.
the observatory has a website you can use to get daily webcam pics and detailed hourly met data (forget the link, you'll have to google it).

We visited SPM in January and the gate was closed due to snow and ice! What a contrast. That is amazing country, a photographers dream. We saw deer up
there. We spent the night in the wonderfully clear air with our windows open till it simply got too cold. Did I mention the air!!??
I know very little of this place and was surprised at the altitude....the road is very steep and windy..... and the views, magnificent!
I have read that this area was heavily populated in pre-columbian times. I can see why. What a rich enviorment!
We have read that it is easy to get lost hiking up there as it is very remote and hikers do get lost there. If I were more mobile, I certainly would
consider a hike in those mountains.

The San Pedro Martir is a sky island, seperated from other high elevation ranges with many unique features... The elevation at the end of the road, at
the observatory is 9,200' and Diablo Mountain is almost 1,000' higher!
