Never been to Baja or Mexico and am looking for an adventure.
I understand some of the Mexican culture from growing up in East LA. I'm pretty self sufficient, have a new truck and camper.
Want to head to BOLA to fish and maybe hit some other spots... remoteness is key.
Need to keep in contact with the mainland as I have a business.
So the questions are:
How to keep in contact?
How long to BOLA from the border?
TJ or Tecate entry?
Anything I should have, paperwork-wise upon entry?

Good place to ask your questions, Rookie. A lot of people on this board will be able to assist you in many ways. You can also use the "Search"
function (first button on blue bar on top of this page). Nomads may also post links to other threads where some of your questions have already been
answered, and sometimes discussed in much greater detail..
So just relax, wind down into Mexican Time, be prepared to answer questions and watch it all unfold...

Best place to use phone in Bahia is at the "phone company" next to the liqour store. There are several places to use the internet if that works for
you.
Border to Bahia is 8 to 81/2 hrs. including a quick lunch stop.
Gas up in El Rosario, last dependable gas to Bahia (Nomad Baja Cacuts owns it, and the hotel right there)
If you decide to so into Baja Sur, you will need a "tourist card"
DO NOT FORGET YOUR MEXICAN AUTO INSURANCE! Your US policy does not cover you in Mexico and it is a CRIME to have an accident, (you don't want to go
there!)

You could also look into renting a satellite phone for the trip. They are relatively inexpensive and work anywhere you go, no matter how remote. I
recently rented one from this company in San Diego:

There is an internet shop in BOLA across from Mercado Xitlali (yellow bldg at the end of the main street, after the street makes a 90 degree right
turn). It is dial up, but it works.
If you are looking for remote, try Bahia Las Animas. Continue south out of BOLA about 30 miles and take the turn off to the left. Go approx 11 miles
on sand tracks to the bay. There is a fisherman's shack there and that is it, so you need to bring all your supplies with you. Get a AAA map of Baja
for the direction specifics.

Could be a good place to spend some time.

One of your questions is interesting to me, the one asking how long of a drive is it to BOLA.
The answers given already are on the money. My question is why you would think about making it in one day's drive to BOLA? It's quite a distance, road
south of San Quintin is narrower and slower and it is in that area that you'd attempt to make up for a slow drive by higher speeds to get to BOLA
before dark. (a necessary thing to do).
And, from my experiences the drive, south of El Rosario is quite scenic, especially when encountered the first time. That is precisely where I'd think
you'd want to slow down to enjoy the beauty that is Baja.
Stop half-way (lots of choices) may be an idea to toy with.

Welcome to the board, I LOVE your name dude...there are internet cafes nearly everywhere even in remote villages...by the way you need a tourist card
when you enter mexico...bring cash, not many ATM's or places that cash travellers cheques either. If you get down our way, we are a few hours
southwest of BOLA on the cool pacific side and nice and remote but have 2 internet cafes! look us up and we'll show you around to some awesome secret
spots...love to meet you. you are gonna have a blast!
