Hook,

Perfect timing amigo. I was just holding off putting new tires on until the next trip to Baja got closer. Existing Rugged Trail (BFG) on our Xterra with 27,000 miles are not up to any more offroading. Other than poor wear, the tires did a respectable job for OEM tires. Got to run them in the snow and the traction was great, as well as quiet.

Replacing them with the Michelin LTX AT/2's 165/75/16, mounted, lifetime balance and rotation, tax, $680.

I have had the LTX's on two other trucks and they are very good all around tires with outstanding wear, quiet, excellent wet traction, and good offroad traction. Never had any sidewall puncture issues with them either.

Thanks again for the tip.

Glad it worked out for you, Ken. I will be real interested in seeing what kind of mileage you get on the Xterra with those.

BTW, how has the Xterra been as a vehicle? I will be looking at getting something more off-road capable for the wife in retirement. A smaller SUV might be great for runs to the warehouse stores.

What year? How many miles? 4wd?.......etc. etc.

We have owned a couple Nissan products over the years and they have been real good vehicles.

Hook,

The Xterra was bought for our travels to Baja, and for a commuter car for Paula. It has been trouble free so far (2 years). And yes it has done the Gonzaga route from San Felipe, with no rattles or other problems. It is 2005 offroad 4 by 4 model with roof rack and bilsteen shocks. It has a 265hp motor with 287#'s torque. It is a fine road machine, handles great, quiet, plenty of power, and gets around 18-19 on the highway with reg gas...no more!

The only issue I have yet to sort out is the compliant rear suspension, which is fantastic unless you load it up with camping gear, 2 people, and do aggressive offroading. The rear end will bottom out against the rubber stop block. I don't want to loose the ride for 95% of the driving we do just to beef it up for the rare offroad camping trek. For that reason I tried the Super Springs, the only problem they don't fit the Xterra properly, they rub on the drivers side in the back. Off they came. I would put air bags on, but I have not found ones that fit the vehicle. I'm still looking for those. I have air bags on my F250 4 by 4 and have been very happy for 6 years. I would expect to get 45,000 miles at least out of the new tires, will see.

(After market springs would solve the offroad issue, and I well may end up in that direction if the air bags don't pan out.)
