help calling a mexi cell# from u.s.

woody with a view - 8-28-2007 at 07:08 PM

when i dial 01152 + the ten digit cell # i get an error message, "dial 1 after the code 52."

HELP:?::?::?::?::?::?:

anyone know the right way?

DianaT - 8-28-2007 at 07:14 PM

Yes,

Dial the 1 after the 52---and then the rest of the number. I understand that it started as a way to show that you were calling a cell phone, not a land line, and there is some charge involved.

However, on our bill, we did not really see a difference between our calls to a land line and our calls to the cell phone

Good luck
Diane

You aren't in Kansas/USA anymore. Always a charge to call cell phones in Baja.

It changed around the beginning of the year. The good news is that people with Mexican cells are no longer charged a big per minute fee to receive incoming international calls.

The pain the ass thing is that you can't dial it like that when in Mexico from a US phone. You have to omit the 1. So you can't just use the numbers as-is in your address book.

PS, using a "+" instead of "011" or "001" is much more handy. + works before any country code. Program all your numbers with a + and you can just dial from your address book no matter where you are in the world. No need to think about the dialing rules.

That is a good thing! Now, if I can just figure out how to find out how many minutes I have left on my TelCel phone before I suddenly cannot make or receive calls.:lol:

I think you can just dial *333 and follow the prompt to find out many pesos you have left.

Thanks! I also received a U2U with directions---everything with my TelCel phone is in Spanish, and I continue to struggle through with my limited Spanish and a dictionary.

I have read that keeping the mind active when one is getting older, including learning a new language, helps keep the mind strong. Sure hope that is true.

Now where did I put that TelCel phone---:P

Thanks

Diane

Cell Spanish / English

After wrestling with my MX cell phone (in Spanish) for a few months, :light: I finally asked the young woman working in the store where I bought it if she could change the phone text to English..... Took her about 5 seconds ! ! ! :?:

Yup, I did the same thing, but the printed instructions are all in Spanish. Maybe if I had not bought the cheapest one available, things would be easier. :P

Larry, thanks---can't wait to cross the border and try these things---I read Spanish better than I hear it.

While frustrating at times, this new adventure is so much fun and so educational.

I got a big laugh at myself...

Mexray - 8-28-2007 at 09:53 PM

...when I bought a Mexican Telcel phone...the manual was indeed Spanish, as were the prompts on the phone...but when I turned the manual upside down and backwards, or some such thing, I found the info in ENGLISH! It even told me how to get the phones prompts to display in English!

I had to laugh, because you know at home how most gadgets we buy have the instructions in several languages...and you have to find the English part to run that darn thing!

Well - it was just the reverse with that new fangled phone...'I' was the 'foreigner' looking through the manual to find the 'secondary' language!

To get your Mex cell phone manual in English -- look up the owner's manul on line at the manufacturer's website. Many of the models sold here are NOT sold in the US but are sold in other English speaking countries, sojust keep looking until you find your model with manual in English.

To call a Mexican cell phone (or landline) from a US cell phone or a US landline you must have international dialing enabled which will require a phone call to your service provider.

Diane and others,

Our Cingular (now AT&T) worked perfectly in Bahia Asuncion on our recent trip. And anywhere else there was a repeater. It was using Tel Cel as a carrier.

I owe a trip report for Bahia Asuncion, preview: Awesome, beautiful scenery, comfortable, fun, Thanks Shari and Juan!

Sorry we missed you, wanted to stay to the end of the fiesta, but committments called.--Maybe next time---assuming there will be a next time. Anxious to see your trip report and hear what you thought of that area---you know how we feel.

We have T-Mobile here and they claim it works down there---well it doesn't. But with the US phone, if you call a local Mexican number, are you charged long distance fees?

We really don't mind have the two cell phones because the TelCel one is the prepaid type. And now with all the GREAT information we have from this thread, it will even be better---going to search for that manual Bajabound suggested.

Work on that report ----lots of pictures, I hope.
