ULTRA LOW SULPHER DIESEL

fly-boy - 9-6-2007 at 10:10 AM

I am headed to baja in two weeks and would sure like to drive my new truck but only if ULSD (ultra low sulpher diesel) is available.

Does anyone have conclusive evidence that it is being sold in Baja yet?

Thanks Nomads!

fly-boy - 9-6-2007 at 02:24 PM

I viewed the earlier posts on ULSD but wondered if there was any additional info-

Wasn't someone going to get the fuel tested?

Testing

Roasty - 9-9-2007 at 06:54 PM

Somebody was, and I have 14 gallons sitting in my driveway in a metal tank in San Diego if anybody wants to test some.
I took my new 2008 F-250 down to Bola three weeks ago and had no problems with the deisel- was it/ is it low sulphur ? still waiting for the absolute answer on that one.

Hook - 9-9-2007 at 07:26 PM

If your just going for a week or two, I wouldn't sweat it.

Bob is our canaria en un mina de carbon; our cerdo de Guinea. That's the best proof we have, in the absence of a test. Of course, it might only be proof that higher sulphur diesel doesnt result in immediate consequences.

There is NO definitive answer on what type of diesel, from station to station. Even the Pemex sources admit it's introduction is spotty.

My Jeep Liberty ran perfectly on Mex diesel for 2 weeks and about 2500 miles. The best thing about diesel is no lines at the pump.

And the price (in Mexico).

From the pages of the Vagabundos newsletter, Chubasco..........

A member wrote directly to one Guillermo Villa Montano who works for Pemex and he contacted an unnamed western sale representative for Pemex. He states, "We only have ULSD in these areas: Rosarito, Mexicali, Nogales and Ensenada. The correspondence was dated August 1, 2007.

At least according to this correspondence, no ULSD exists outside of the immediate border area which has me wondering if it is even refined by Pemex or whether it is being imported from US refineries. There has been some indication in the past that Pemex has imported refined gasoline from the US for use in proximity to the border.

I think Baja Cactus posted the same information but said that these are the terminals that have the ULSD. And it is being distributed to all stations within their areas.

Would you happen to know when they are going to re-tool that truck? A complete body and frame change?

We looked at new F 350's last weekend, they're the same as our 99' except for some doo-dads on the dash and the front suspension.

Why mess with a good thing? Who makes a stronger truck? Nice roomy cab, too. Some manufacturers make changes just for the sake of marketing. Ford has a good cab and chassis........it's the rest of it we worry about.

I had the misfortune of riding shotgun in a newer Tacoma for about 2 hours recently and let's just say it's not meant for anyone over 5-8 or 175 lbs..........which I am both.:wow:

BTW, the front suspension change is not something to be discounted lightly. I know.......I have the old style with leafs up front.

What I wouldnt give for coils on my 2000 F350.........

You probably didn't mean that literally, but there are kits to convert your truck to coils. Check skyjacker.com for one.

Bob and Susan - 9-13-2007 at 09:27 AM

try a dodge...we just got the BIG cab model

there's more room in the back seat than the front...no lie!!!

Hook - 9-13-2007 at 10:10 AM

If I was looking to buy a new diesel truck, I would have to look long and hard at the Dodge, like bob and susan recommend.

thanks, roberto. I do mean it literally, well, until I see the pricing. Took my Lance off for the first time since before summer and even with the tires at 60psi, the bladder is taking a pounding on the way to work.

Here a suspension system just discovered.

I am looking to buy a newer Baja Truck . Any word of change on availibility of ULSD in Baja Sur?

David K - 9-20-2012 at 03:03 PM

Wow, you bumped up a 5 year old thread!

There has been other/ newer diesel fuel posts... I burn Magna gasolina.

capt. mike - 9-20-2012 at 03:08 PM

fly - boy - ??
you should fly - lots of 100 LL avail but it costs a lot.... or Jet A if you use that.

bigmike58 - 9-20-2012 at 04:38 PM

Well, it's 2012 and the jury is still out. Most believe that ULSD has not made it to Baja Sur. I would concur since my 2008 has a DPF and it acts up after 4-5 tanks in Mulege. We add some lucas and it seems to help. The miners from Santa Rolsalia have had issues with the DPF clogging.

Sometimes it's confusing to find stuff on a site that one hasn't navigated much. Here's a little helpful hint that may benefit you:

There is a search link right below this site's page title "Baja Nomad". It helps at times....but many of us do indeed ask the same questions over and over ......regardless :-) Welcome TomS

I just recieved this note from Antonio at Baja Cactus, El Rosario

Hello Bob... ULSD is available all throughout northern Baja, including of course Bahía de Los Angeles and Jesús María. I hope this information helps. Happy and safe travel..

BajaWarrior - 9-22-2012 at 05:23 AM

I have a 2012 Super Duty with the Diesel 6.7 and travel frequently to South San Felipe. the truck has 12k miles on it now and has used Mexican fuel about half the time.

I find that I am going through the D.E.F (diesel exhaust fluid, if so equipped) a lot quicker than it should. You probably need to top off your DEF tank (5 gallon capacity) before crossing the border.

When the indicator comes on at the dash it tells you that you only have 500 more miles to go before refilling it. I buy it at the truck stops in the 2.5 gallons containers for $20 each. Some truck stops/gas stations have it at the pump and it's a lot cheaper like the Flyin' J at Erinburgh Arizona and the 10 highway. The Ford dealers want about $35 for the 2.5 gallon quantity.
