Loreto Restaurant questions

jk - 9-11-2007 at 06:33 PM

Pachamama's--is it still open?

A restaurant a few miles north of Loreto on the beach--I forget the name but I read about it on this form a while back--is it still open?

A restaurant on the beach almost to Juncalito (if I remember correctly) that serves great shellfish--is it still there?

Where else in Loreto besides the basics of McLulu's and Cafe Ole would you recommend? I am not really into pizza, but good food, mainly Mexican unless somebody's got a good authentic thing going.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will be in Loreto in early October. JK

bajajudy - 9-11-2007 at 06:37 PM

I would like to know what happened to Picazon(on the beach north of town), too. The owners are friends of mine.
Cant wait to hear the recommendations!

Food was okay but...

BMG - 9-11-2007 at 06:41 PM

... the margaritas at Giggling Dolphin Boat Bar really get your heart rate up!

Pachamama's was open when we drove through in May.

Boshvideo - 9-11-2007 at 06:46 PM

It wasn't great in August.

Islas de Loreto on the Malecon. Tio Lupe on Salvatierra. Both handle fresh fish very well. Also, Super Burro for humongous flank steak burritos, a block So of Salvatierra, turn So at the big Pescador market. The place on the beach So of Nopolo is open.

The one out of town to the north is La Picazone. Just saw the new improvenents and the new kitchen. I think it's great! They will open in two weeks +-. The others are still open. If the streets are done try the Giggeling Dolphin on Juarez

docsmom - 9-12-2007 at 01:30 PM

Finally, a way to use the exercise bike in my bedroom. All this time it's just been a place to drape my bathrobe over!

roundtuit - 9-12-2007 at 06:34 PM

El Nido as you enter town, but has changed name. Excellent food, and great steaks

Jig - 9-12-2007 at 06:57 PM

El Nido is now Domingo's Place. Not just steaks but try his pork chops or his quail. Domingo's back patio will be open again this fall. This is a MUST! The patio is great!

The Argentinian restaurant Pachamamma (sorry if I spelled that incorrectly)

Our favorites: Cafe Mita and Islas

djh - 9-12-2007 at 09:04 PM

Cafe Mita right on the town square.... Owner Juan Carlos, is a very nice man, a good friend and neighbor and he serves wonderful food. We always love to walk up to Mita's to hear Juan Carlos ~ "David and Shing, welcome back home.... time for some home cooking ! "

We also enjoy Islas. The owners are great folks, their chef knows his stuff, and it is hard to beat that view ! !

We'll be down in Nov. again.

Mmmmmmmmm now I'm HUNGRY ! ! :(

cajhawk - 9-14-2007 at 12:10 PM

Mitas is my favorite, although 1697 and Islas are also very good for fish. Try the fresh fish with garlic at Mitas or if you are adventurous the fish with Diablo Sauce. If you want Mexican food, Super Burro has a funny name but is the best!

bajajudy - 9-14-2007 at 01:12 PM

No one has mentioned Mexico Lindo...is it still there?

Paula - 9-14-2007 at 03:33 PM

Mexico lindo is still there, Judy, if the construction on Hidalgo hasn't done them in yet. The food is inconsistent-- sometimes great, sometimes not.

But I've never had a bad dinner at Pachamama, or at Islas Loreto.

rhintransit - 9-15-2007 at 01:11 PM

I think no one has answered the question about the highway restaurant near El J...I don't remember the official name, something del Mar I think, but we all just call it The Clam Shack. still there, still operating, still uneven in quality. some days good, some not. clams usually very good. do watch your checks/totals...I have heard several reports of two separate ones, one for the table/payer, one for the register.

bajajudy - 9-15-2007 at 04:51 PM

I think that it is Vista del Mar

Paula - 9-15-2007 at 08:02 PM

I think I know that it is Vista delMar.

Is that a definite maybe?

Judy and Paula,
That'll run up your Nomad score:P:P:biggrin:

Phil S - 9-16-2007 at 06:25 PM

My vote for Juan's Mita's restaurant. And love listening to Herzon playing guitar. Rather hot evening in July when we were there for a week, but was well worth it. The 'fresh catch' was out of this world. Probably meal #22 or something like that. Consistantly good quality & service.
Our second choice is to go up to second story of La Luna on Juarez, and he'll produce a menu from the restaurant down below (sorry forgotten the restaurant). He's good company, and the food has been good. Looking forward to the western bar & restaurant beng open when we return in October, just on the road to San Javier. Great hamburger & fries, and on Sundays, eggs benedict. Yum yum.

hey you know how we :dudette:s are!

one more.....

rhintransit - 9-16-2007 at 08:44 PM

Sta Lucia on the malecon is very good for breakfast (open at 6am! amazing...gringo breakfast hours!) and lunch. no dinner service. good whole wheat home made breads and sweet rolls, croussants, etc for take out also. service can be exquisitely slow so be prepared to settle in, watch the water and sip a drink. take a book. the healthy smoothies and the home made lemonade by the pitcher are recommended.

Paula - 9-16-2007 at 09:27 PM

Ditto on Santa Lucia-- great smoothies and the enchiladas de pollo en mole are delicious!

Worldtraveller - 9-16-2007 at 09:50 PM

I was there a few weeks ago. Food was great. service and accuracy of order was inconsistent. We enjoyed & will go again.

What ever happened to El Taste? Did the prices go way out of control, or food quality go downhill? I liked it before they re-modeled it.Mario is a really nice guy tho...

Paula - 9-17-2007 at 07:42 AM

Sally, the prices did go up at El Taste, quality more or less the same. Maybe more less than more. Francisco, the good waiter is a panga captain now, and I've heard that Mario has left too. I agree that it was much nicer before re-modeling.

backninedan - 9-17-2007 at 11:25 AM

Of all the places mentioned, El Taste is my least favorite. I just won't go there.

Phil S - 9-20-2007 at 09:07 AM

We quit going to El Taste, when we learned that his wife no longer was the cook there. Loved the breakfasts though. Guess she went to work somewhere else. If Mario is gone, perhaps he is working with his wife??????????????????????

Julie - 9-20-2007 at 04:01 PM

Mario is gone from El Taste and has been for about 4 months. One of my previous students has been an employee there for a couple of years and reported that the new management has change meat suppliers (cheaper) and changed the prices (higher) it was absolutely horrible last time we went in , we did complain to the new manager and do not eat there any longer.
Talked to Alejandro of Picazon today and they plan to reopen in about two weeks.
Mike at Del Borrocho reports they will reopen Oct. 2nd
Leon and Ali of Pachamama plan to will reopen Oct. 5th
As for the Giggling Dolphin (and Iguana Inn) quien sabe?

bajajudy - 9-20-2007 at 04:41 PM

El Taste tried to rip us off one night...never been back:no:

Cypress - 9-20-2007 at 05:07 PM

Augies! Eat, drink and have a good time.

backninedan - 9-20-2007 at 06:15 PM

I agree on Augies for a burger and a beer. Best burgers in town.

cajhawk - 11-6-2007 at 04:20 PM

LOL. I had a great meal yesterday at Santa Lucinda, albeit not what I ordered to eat. It has a great view of the water, outstanding food and very reasonable.

The Giggling Dolphin has reopened and is a great lunch or inexpensive dinner place.

Loreto Restaurant

cajhawk - 3-12-2008 at 05:09 PM

Had lunch yesterday at Mediteraneo. Food was excellent and they have reduced prices from when I had last been there. I talked to the owner and he said they were going to start a Tapas Bar next month for hors de voures for their Happy Hour. I shared the fish of the day and a brisket sandwich with a compadre. Muy bueno!

rhintransit - 3-12-2008 at 09:19 PM

well, since this topic got bumped back up to the today's post-ings, newbies or oldies not local who are reading through it and making restaurants-to try lists/notes...Sta Lucia is no more. the space has been taken over by Augie's next door so the location is still there to enjoy, along with Augie's food offerings.

Paula - 3-12-2008 at 10:05 PM

Santa Lucia lives on at Los Mandiles, next door to Mediterraneo on the malecon.

The bakery didn't make the move, but the chicken enchiladas in mole did, along with many great dishes from the old menu.

The cook at Los Mandiles is the cook who used to be at Santa Lucia-- same geat food.

bill erhardt - 3-13-2008 at 07:16 AM

Alejandro, senior and junior, with dorado on the beach in front of La Picazon. Through a strange quirk in Mexican law, fish dropped off at La Picazon before return to the marina in Loreto do not count against daily limits.

Its a year later and another October trip to Loreto. McLulu's is closed, but did she open another restaurant outside of town per another post? Are there other new places we should consider? Is La Pizacon open? It wasn't the day we tried last year. Thanks for the advice!

bill erhardt - 9-9-2008 at 06:18 PM

jk..... La Picazon is still going strong. The restaurant closed a couple of days after tropical storm Julio, and may well suffer another hit in the wake of the storm forecast to arrive Thursday, but barring another they should be up and running in October. And, the Mita Gourmet is now serving breakfast, and has grilled fare after 10:00 p.m.

backninedan - 9-9-2008 at 06:19 PM

jk, you may want to give Koko Changs a try. It is a chinese place located at the old Koko Loko which is across the street from the marina. It is quite good and the prices are very affordable.

Cesars for fish tacos is still one of my favorite spots and of course Super Burro is a don't miss for the biggest and best burrito I have ever had.

Del Baracho is another very good spot and is due to re-open in Oct. Not sure of the date.

Mediterraneo

CP - 9-15-2008 at 08:44 AM

Tried Mediterraneo for lunch about a year ago. Terrible food, high prices (especially for the level of the food), good waiter.

Can I get some more recent comments about this restaurant? We like the location and atmosphere and are looking for a 'new' place to take visitors other than our favorite - Panchamamas. Reluctant to give Mediterraneo another try, yet willing to if there are more positive current comments.

Have been repeatedly to Gig. Dolph, Islas, El Nido, Mita, 1697 (and once to El Taste). All good in their own ways. Have I missed any places similar to these?

When I was last a t McLulu's in June, Lourdes told me she was closing in August and going on a long vacation to visit relatives in California. She said when she came back, she was going to serve lunch from her home. I asked her when that might be, she said, "quien sabe."

Anyone have a suggestion for a roadside taco stand in Loreto, similar to McLulu's?

There's a really good tacos al pastor (sp?) near Super Pan Garcia. Caesar's is good. There are several on Calle Juarez that are good too.

Last few times we walked by El Taste, it was closed. Perhaps they went out of business? Not surprised.

Another nice place is on Salvatierra, close to the Malecon, behind the first gift shop. It's called Biznaga, and is owned by Herzon, the guitar player who used to play at Mita. They closed for the summer but should reopen.

Paula - 9-15-2008 at 11:33 AM

Okay, the BEST tacos in Loreto are at El Sinaloense. It is a cart that parked daily for several months across the street from Juarez market, on Calle Juarez. In late spring it moved to Calle Madero, outside El Rodeo and Black and White disco bars, near La Damiana Inn. It is open mid-morning to mid-afternoon, and it is THE BEST.

Also really good is the new place that Don mentioned kitty corner from Super Pan Garcia bakery. It is 3 or 4 blocks north of El Sinaloense. It opens in the evening, around 6 or 7pm.
