Arachnid Reminder

Gnome-ad - 9-17-2007 at 12:04 PM

While cleaning up after Henriette we came across a good size female black widow hanging out under the seat cushions of our hanging swing. Well, yes, it had been on the ground for a year and a half under a tarp, but it could just as easily have been hanging in a shaded area of our property. So just a reminder, though Baja has some pretty scary looking insects and spiders that will do you little harm, there are those that will do a number on you if you poke into their abodes unannounced. The bite of the black widow is one of those ... will make you sick for about five days with bizarre symptoms.

See the thread on scary bug for another nasty sting.

I found my first ever scorpion in my house this morning. He was hiding under the bath mat.
Now we are into what I call the tropical shake. Before we use towels, put on clothes etc, we shake them out to make sure nothing is hiding in them. Used to do it in the Caribbean but had become complacent here because in 10 years I had never seen one in my house. And of course if you wear real shoes(we dont) shake them out for sure. They do love the toes of shoes.
I am sure that this guy arrived in my house when I brought all the cushions in the house from the porch in preparation for the hurricane. Next time they will go into the bodega.

Wondered what those screams were.
We could hear them from Canada.

Just got back from my beach house, ya, just now, nice and hot there.

Maybe this is a coincidence, but yesterday morning I found a big black Tarantula at my front screen door, and then a completely differant type of Tarantula, more of a tan type and not as fuzzy, at my back screen door last night.

Both were caught and released further from my home without incident.

Years ago I saw large migrations of Tarantulas near L.A. Bay crossing the highway, anyone else seen this?

Baja Warrior,
Sounds like it was a good time to head away from the beach house.
Maybe you should bring reinforcements next time you go back.
