Baja Clothes

Al G - 9-19-2007 at 11:14 AM

Time is near and I am now in the dumping mode.
The big issue is now, is do I need my dress suits and just about ever other article of clothes I have...I think I am worst then some women...at buying clothes.
20-25 suits...40 short sleeve shirts, 30 long sleeve...20 pair slacks.
also 5-6 pair jeans...2 pair jeans shorts...25-30 pair assorted shorts...10 sets of sweats...50 ball caps...2 leather jackets...1 rain jacket, several I cannot remember jackets.
This sounds silly and personal, but I do not know what is reasonable...assumming I rid myself of 15 suits:?: would suits be worth bringing down to give away:?: Have you ever needed suits or dress slacks? Women will probably know the answers, but I am single and the girls I know...don't go to Baja:biggrin:

DENNIS - 9-19-2007 at 11:25 AM

Baja clothes = Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts. Nada mas.

bajaguy - 9-19-2007 at 11:27 AM

1 pair clean tennis shoes for formal occasions

Price - 9-19-2007 at 11:30 AM

You might want to keep 1 nice suit and 1 sport coat & shirts to match - other than that Dennis is right
;);)

Wow...and I thought I had a lot of clothes!!! Even a future as a time share salesman wouldn't require that much clothing!

OK, here's a woman's 2 pesos:

I'm in agreement with one suit...you never know when you may need it. You should have a couple of pair of nice slacks. You need a couple of nice, but not formal shirts, and a pair of shoes to go with the suit, slacks, etc.

You can't live in shorts and tee shirts all the time! Sometimes you might want to go out to nice places, and don't forget it does get cold in the winter!

If the women you know don't go to Baja, it's definitely time for you to meet some new women!!! You may want something nice to wear when you meet them!

Mango - 9-19-2007 at 11:55 AM

Keep one nice suit to attend future weddings, funerals, etc. I'd keep the one thats a little too big for you since it will be too small after a few pacifico "workouts".

Then donate the rest to a church, homeless shelter, employment training center, red cross, etc.. in the hopes that some poor soul who can not afford a suit will be able to use it in an interview to help them get a decent job.

Otherwise, I agree. Dennis is right. Some shorts and a comfortable shirt is the norm for us gringos and many locals.

If you plan on going into a church/mission (on Sunday or just for a tourist visit) I recommend dressing a little more respectfully with pants and shoes.

Cypress - 9-19-2007 at 11:56 AM

Travel light.:D With any luck you'll never have to wear a suit again.:D

backninedan - 9-19-2007 at 12:20 PM

I kept one sport coat and a nice pair of slacks. They have been hanging in the closet for four years now.

DENNIS - 9-19-2007 at 12:25 PM

Oh, yeah. That one suit for the funeral? Pick the one you want to wear for eternity.

But you can 95% of the time for sure! And note that Elizabeth is the first person to suggest/mention TEE shirts which is a staple here. Then maybe 2 or 3 island type shirts with collars for the more formal occasions.

Cypress - 9-19-2007 at 01:19 PM

As you head south cut the sleeves of your shirts and shorten your pants up.

Osprey - 9-19-2007 at 01:31 PM

All I ever wear is my toga (now and then a gold wreath crown during official celebrations). My wife says I look goofy when I wear my orange Crocs.

Osprey - 9-19-2007 at 01:34 PM

Just kidding. The seahawk is famous so all I wear is his namesake: Falcon de Playera -- his breast is white, hence the name T-Shirt falcon (playera means T-Shirt). It's a good match for my beard and hair which are turning white from the sun.

DENNIS - 9-19-2007 at 01:35 PM

Osprey.......

What's wrong with that? It's a unisex thing. Men call it a Toga and women call it a Mumu. Not sure about the wreath unless it has ear-buds.

The toga sounds good, Osprey. But I would agree that the crocs DO NOT GO with the toga. With a toga you wear THONGS. To clarify, that would mean thong SANDALS.

The orange crocs should be saved for dancing on fall evenings at Cabo Wabo.

DENNIS - 9-19-2007 at 02:06 PM

Maybe the orange crocs AND the thong while tripping the light fantastic at Cabo Wabo. Fifteen minutes of fame would be guaranteed.

Al G,
I also am within days of leaving and am into final packing .
So, this is what I am keeping:
ALL of my Tommy Bahamma and Indigo Palms clothes, the casual and dress up....I have been a collector for years, mainly for cruises.
A couple of sport coats.
About fifty t- shirts. figure I'll never have to buy one again.
Sandels and tennis shoes... and one pair black dress shoes.
And finally , I am keeping my tux..you never know, and a guy always looks great in a tux (at least I am told by the women in my life).

I imagine my uniform will be TB cargo shorts, t-shirt and sandals.

Bon Voyage !

bajajudy - 9-19-2007 at 02:13 PM

Indeed they do, (sigh).

Al G - 9-19-2007 at 02:31 PM

You people are the best...love the answers.
oldlady wins via u2u...she may post it...I liked it alot.
I may have to buy a toga...my fishing rags feel like a toga. If all my clothes weighed what my fishing pants and shirt does, I would not have an issue.
More posts please:biggrin:

Russ - 9-19-2007 at 02:34 PM

Get a huge storage and save them all for awhile. Seems like you may have to go through some withdrawal or shock therapy. Save the cotton under ware. You could dye them to look "in".
Maybe NOT!

Tommy Bahamma and Indigo Palms clothes,........now I am under a new issue...I only have Banana Republic:lol::lol::lol:

DENNIS - 9-19-2007 at 02:46 PM

Don't worry about the label, Albert. The only thing inside the shirt that should concern you is you. Image is everything.

capitolkat - 9-19-2007 at 05:40 PM

This is really great -- I have about the same no of suits etc and just last week my wife said take your tux to Mexico when we move- Somebody may have a big New Years party or something and you'll want it. so it's one suit ,two sport coats my tux ,slacks and shirts as I like to look a little dressed up when we go out to eat or church- and everything else is shorts and Hawaiian style- with some long sleeves for fishing--

woody with a view - 9-19-2007 at 05:45 PM

cheap rubber flip flops, shorts and a tank top......and a visor and shades......now, where's that cooler????

CaboRon - 9-19-2007 at 05:47 PM

Al G,

Not to worry, I only wear Tommy Bahamma because it is about the softest cotten I have ever felt.... and their cotton silk blend shirts are just awesome ! And the cargo shorts are fully lined with soft cotton so that you can be a little more casual with things.

Whoa...now that would take some getting use to...I just cannot be that casual...Tell where to look for Tommy Bahama...:lol::lol:

Sallysouth - 9-19-2007 at 07:14 PM

A few pairs of really lightweight long pants with elastic at the legs for the "bug nights" on the patio, a few pair of light socks for the same, and long sleeve, lightweight shirts. I'd buy a pair of Tevos also if I were you.Suits in Baja??Like windgrl says, for marrying and burying:lol::lol::lol: It does get "cold " so I would take some sweats, shirts and pants.

windgrrl - 9-19-2007 at 07:18 PM

...or hatching, matching and dispatching (name of a former Canadian comedy pilot).

Arrgh, where's me coordinating :spingrin:hornpipe?!!

1. Weddings...attempt an intervention before the engagement
2. Funerals...attempt a semi-healthy lifestyle to delay the inevitable
3. If #1 or #2 fail, buy a suit large enough or a lifestyle healthy enough to fit in it 5 years later.

Saw a suit at 10/15/06 a friends' wedding in Denver(I was best/only/last man) on a family member. Wow, 40 lbs and 40 years ago that suit was in style! Nehru would have been only way to top it!

The classic tux never goes out of style.

Paula - 9-19-2007 at 08:58 PM

During our first full winter in Loreto I was often cold, and since then I've taken more warm clothes down. fleece jackets, jeans, socks and even real shoes are good to have. Boy do I ever not like to have to wear those socks and shoes though. I think todos Santos gets at least as chilly as Loreto.

Sallysouth - 9-19-2007 at 11:20 PM

Paula, I was thinking back to a few years ago when Mija lived and worked in Loreto, and had her first born in La Paz. I went down to help(good gramma), and stayed for a good amount of time.Well, a Nana needs some time out so I would sit outside on one of the porches, and have a smoke and a c-cktail, just to be bitten up the ying yang by the dang bo-bos and the nasty sceeters! I learned then to wrap rubber bands around my ankles, wear socks and tuck my hands into my sleeves. Made for some funny manuvers getting my glass into my mouth tho.Thats when I discovered the lizards and frogs . They seemed to be atracted to anything wet and the bug population appeared to diminish somewhat. It was probably my imagination, but it felt like it at the time!!

Bajafun777 - 9-19-2007 at 11:45 PM

Well, the one suit, one sport coat, and all cotton shirts, shorts, pants,T-shirts and good heavy duty sweat pants will do just fine when I go full time in Baja next October. These are all I will need until I get toasted and sprinkled into the ocean where I want to end up. However, if I never wear another tie and suit the rest of my life it will be just great, real great, actually better than great. You can not take too much clothing down as you have to save room for your ice chest which will carry you ice cold beer and carne asada for the BBQ. CaboRon has it right just let me be free in my shorts for that just fine and relaxed mood. No Hurry, No Worry, Just Fun~~ as it should be when in Baja just ask Bernie. Later, bajafun777

Gnome-ad - 9-21-2007 at 11:24 AM

You will find you need less stuff here, of every sort. Bring enough to make you feel secure about traveling back up north, but don't count on wearing a suit here. bajajudy is right about the cotton - lightweight natural fabrics are much more comfortable here - cotton, rayon, silk (when it's cool), linen. I see Mexican women wearing polyester pretties that would make this gringa look and feel like I'm in a sweat box. Maybe after I've been here a dozen years I'll be able to do that, but will be too old to care.

capn.sharky - 9-21-2007 at 08:36 PM

I think the ladies look great in a thong bikini bottom and nothing else. Dress light as it can get hot in Loreto.

Norm - 9-22-2007 at 09:58 AM

ONE NICE BRA !!!!!!!!!!!!:tumble:
