Baja Surf 2wd beach access??

surfkatcher - 9-23-2007 at 05:54 PM

Hola! I'm headed on my first trip down into Baja to hunt for surf and camp for 25 days in October. I unfortunately only have access to a 2wd toyota pickup. How much will this limit surf prospects from TJ to Cabo?

hint

the single most common fault for people (gringo stupido mostly) getting stuck in sand, is being unaware the value of low tire pressure. (in conjuction with trying to accelerate when the hint of getting stuck begins! WRONG MOVE!!)

So, you should concentrate on being able to reflate your tires anywhere after deflation, and consequently getting unstuck.

You can go anywhere with 2WD. You simply need to be able to reflate the tires wherever necessary.

And in some cases 6-8 lbs is not too low.

SOME CARPET STRIPS WILL ALLSO HELP YOU GET UNSTUCK

Mango - 9-23-2007 at 06:37 PM

Yep, the above posters are correct. Just get yourself a good portable air compressor that either plugs into your cigarette lighter or attaches to your car battery. Keep it out of the sand, so it does not jam up.

(Do a search here for "Air compressor" I know there are a couple of good treads on makes/models/cost, etc..)

When in sand keep your speed up.. it's all about momentum. When you decide to stop.. pick your spot. Hard packed and be at the top of a "hill" facing down.. and you will be able to get going again.

All sorts of tricks to get free; but, low tire pressure will keep you from getting stuck or help you get free.

Also bring a shovel, tow strap, and some carpet/wood,etc to put under your tires to get rolling again..

I'd do some research on how to get unstuck. But you can go more places in 2wd if you know what you are doing, than someone with 4wd that does not know what they are doing.

Have a good trip and may you ride the perfect wave. Buen onda.

bajalou - 9-23-2007 at 06:56 PM

Always start moving pointing straight ahead and continue straight till you have some momentum up. Trying to turn while starting will almost guarantee you spinning and probably stuck.

Four wheel drive on a Baja surf trip is convenient if you want to park your truck "just over there" instead of "right here" 100 feet away. If you stay on the dirt roads and hard spots you will be just fine. 99.9% of the distance you travel will be two wheel drive and only that last few feet needs extra caution. You may not get to park your truck in the b-tchinest camp spot, but a little walk will get you there.

We tow guys in rental cars out all the time along la costa where we live. Their usual mistake is to pull off the "road" into a little sandy arroyo right near the beach. All they have to do is park on the side of the road, but they want to get the car "just a little closer."

have fun gadget.....when you return we expect great fotos and incongruous labels for all the spots you guys surf.....get some for the rest of us!!!!!

surfkatcher - 9-24-2007 at 07:03 PM

Wow!! 'Muchisimas gracias' for all of the advice and road wisdom.

I've never surfed Mexico so I really had no clue what to expect in terms of beach access. I have had my share of experiences getting stuck in sand so driving in it won't be completely new. I will plan accordingly--which in my world means keep your Karma right, hope for the best, and plan for the worst.

As for caravaning wow that would be WONDERFUL!! Thanks for the offer Gadget. I will likely get to the TJ border around 10/4 or 10/5. I'm flexible. If I could connect with anyone heading south around that time in October, or meet up somewhere if you have a firm itinerary I would be completely stoked. -- My point of departure is Philadelphia (not my hometown) on 9/29. I could bring some cheese steaks & soft pretzels!!

David K - 9-26-2007 at 03:51 PM

The paved road goes ALL the way from Mex. 1 to the harbor at Santa Rosalillita (was there last July before going to your mom's place)... The road north to Alejandro's and beyond is dirt.

hola surfkatcher. just read your lines. good on ya! i am headin south from oregon in a few weeks and hope to leave from san diego round beginning of october. if it works out a caravan would be dandy. i am drivin a 78' vw bus with my dog lefty. no definate agenda besides lookin for the surf and chillin. so keep in touch and travel safe. cheers, kris

Curt63 - 7-15-2009 at 06:10 PM

Remember, mango said a GOOD air compressor (not cheap) seriously, the cheap ones are crap and even if they continue to run, it can take 20 minutes for one tire.

DO NOT pull onto pavement with aired down tires and start tearing into the curves. Very dangerous!

Be careful, you'll have a blast!

norte - 7-15-2009 at 06:51 PM

Do you guys enjoy 2 year old posts???????????

Curt63 - 7-15-2009 at 07:46 PM

khargis - 7-17-2009 at 10:29 AM

finally got the bus unstuck, 2o minutes to pump a single tire, try 2 years. frickin brutal! 2 years huh, where are the dates on these things? talk a bout a newbie! anyway, its been real. k

805gregg - 7-17-2009 at 05:34 PM

You've got to remember 2 things, as soon as you stop moving, stop tring to. Get out jack it up, (a good farm jack is useful) like Hilift. 2nd stop get out and walk the road first.
