Baja Fall color--here's an Elephant Tree losing its leaves for the season--this particular genera (Bursura) is related to Pistachios and Sumacs, many of which have the same fall colors.

I like that a lot, Mexitron!

Saludos Tortuga

Yosemite is indeed a magical place . Mrs. Tortuga and I had the blessing of living in June Lake on the other side of the Sierras .

After the storm

Skipjack Joe - 9-26-2007 at 12:02 PM

... came the clouds. The water is real low at Tuolomne Meadows in the fall. The clouds are so low up there you feel like you could touch the sky. I spent a good part of the next day looking at reflections.

Y'all have posted such a nice variety of autumn color for us. Thank you.

tortuga... I have never been to the Sawtooth Valley except in the heat of summer. It's really lovely in the autumn, too.

Mexitron... That photo of yours is one I especially like. It speaks to the gardener in me, as well as the photographer. Those little autumn leaves in front of that tree with the incredible bark.:wow:

Igor... These are 2 fine examples of early autumn in Yosemite, and looking at them has got me planning a trip in the next couple of weeks. (You can see some of my favorite Yosemite fall colors in the image below.)
And those cottonwoods.... not Yosemite, is it? I love this image! The colors and textures are so soft and comfy, so inviting and soothing. Feels familiar, as if I've walked there before.

Again, thanks to each of you for sharing your excellent photos.

Well shoot... part of my reply box is missing and I have no "browse" and therefore cannot post my little picture.
Ya think Doug got tired of my pictues?

(Edit: I guess I saw your Sawtooth photo when you posted it earlier to another thread, tortuga. It was a nice one.)

Wonderful photos. It's been a while since we've lived in Idaho but I still miss the falls. Best time of the year.

This isn't a fall colors photo but it is my favorite 'reflections' shot. I was up enjoying a morning cup of coffee in Anacortes. Snapped this pic of the very still morning. Look closely and you'll see the that this pic isn't quite right.

Mexitron - 9-27-2007 at 06:22 AM

BMG...wow! Interesting...perspective seems a little odd though--how'd you take it?

I just snapped it from the back of the boat. Nothing special but as I said, it was very still, not even a whisper of wind or a ripple on the water. There is a clue in the picture that will tell you instantly what makes the perspective look odd.

Skipjack Joe - 9-27-2007 at 09:17 AM

You've flipped the image. The reflections are so perfect it's hard to tell what's real and what's a reflection. Besides the clue you're talking about the color of the real sky is a bit different from the reflection.

tripledigitken - 9-27-2007 at 09:26 AM

Is what looks like a light on the pole the top?

Correct, the photo is upside down. Up at the 'top' is a roller used on the end of the dock fingers to protect boat hulls as they come into the slips. I've never taken another photo that can be flipped like this and be so hard to tell. Just lucky that day.

Skipjack Joe - 9-27-2007 at 11:51 AM

If anyone knows why the color of the sky in a reflection is not the same as the real sky please let me know. I am interested.

I think it has to do with polarized light. The light waves in the sky move in all different directions but once they bounce off the water surface they are somehow filtered and now are directed in a single direction. I think that if that shot had been taken with a polarizing filter the sky and water would have had the same color.

Mexitron - 9-27-2007 at 12:04 PM

Oh, I thought that was a light post...shows you how much I know about boats!

Mexitron - 9-27-2007 at 12:12 PM

When we were in Baja last month the remnants of Hurricane Dean threw some interesting colors out onto the water:

Skipjack Joe - 9-27-2007 at 12:23 PM

Yes, I love it when the water is oily like that.

It's not that uncommon. I see it sometimes in the mornings on the way out with the boat. It's about as good as the sea of cortez ever gets. I don't know why moviemakers don't use that 'phenomenon' more often.

Thanks
