San Felipe Drive

What is the best route to take to San Felipe from East San Diego County (Ramona)? Cross at San Ysidro, Otay, Calexico or Tecate?

Thanks!

Mexicali

West or East. I prefer the East due to less traffic.

Driving that hundred miles on Interstate 8 beats ANY Mexican route.

Baja&Back - 9-24-2007 at 11:45 AM

I-8 to Calexico. For sure. Much faster & easier.

BajaWarrior - 9-24-2007 at 03:29 PM

Ditto that. East crossing.

How's the road down from Mexicali to San Felipe and on thru to HWY 1?:D

Ditto

Unless you desire Duty Free @ the Old crossing and the cambios

Highway 5 is in great condition. Highway 3 (El Chinero to Ensenada) is also in great condition. We took that road coming from Bahia Asuncion about one month ago. Beautiful scenery, fantastic valleys.

South of Puertecitos... well, you should read all the (recent) reports here on Nomad... It is a graded road (2WD) but very rough and slow from a point starting 8 miles south of Puertecitos and going 40 miles to Gonzaga Bay... It hasn't been re-graded in ages... The final 36 miles to Hwy. 1 via Coco's Corner are much better, but washboardy (is that a word?)...

BajaWarrior and David K Thanks for the info.:D Decision time is drawing near. :D Take the Ferry across to Santa Rosalia or drive down from Mexicali:?:

Cajhawk,

Take 67 to lake jennings road (third light at the bottom of the hill., Where freeway starts) turn left, go to I 8 East
Take 98 east to Calexico You can then turn on 111 south in town and go to old crossing. or go striaght to east crossing. To me it depends on the time of day. I have driven both many times and in town is faster except from 4- 7 in the afternoon when there is a lot of traffic. Another tip is taking the river road around Mexicali, if you would like I could give you the directions for that.
They are working on the road just south of town but the rest of the road is great. When and what time are you going?
Have a great time
Mick

From San Diego, east on I 8 to Calexico. I prefer the east crossing off CA7 due to less traffic. Takes 10-15 minutes from the crossing to Hwy 5 to San Felipe.

Thanks for all of the info! I'm leaving Wednesday and coming back Thursday night to look at a development. I will take I-8 to Calexico and down to San Felipe using the East Crossing. I should hit that area around 2:00 p.m. and probably around 4:00 coming back.

Oh ya? Which development? San Felipe?

ArvadaGeorge - 9-25-2007 at 03:39 PM

ARE YOU SAYING Mex 5 has been repaved this year?
Last year it was full of pot holes

BajaWarrior - 9-25-2007 at 03:42 PM

Portions have been repaved only, but all the potholes are filled, two crews working full time. Best I've seen it in years, we go every 2 to 3 weeks. The 4 lane highway is just about south of Pete's Camp and heading north pretty fast.

Watch out for the new STOP signs on the new 4 lane portion!

The development that has been going on for a long time is El Dorado Ranch in San Felipe. I'm taking a look at Baja Diamante, which is building a marina and a golf course (BIG surprise)!

Check customer satisfaction before signing the dotted line in Baja or anywhere for that matter.

cajhawk - 9-25-2007 at 09:17 PM

LOL; I'm checking it out to promote it to customers in U.S. If it meets criteria of clean title, developer financing, acceptable location and quality of contruction I will do so. If not, I won't.

Those stop signs at the new intersections on highway 5, at the Ejido, are covered in black plastic bags and are not being enforced as yet. Every now and then a plastic bag blows off a stops sign and someone actually stops. Lots of close calls because the locals don't stop.
A Mexican highway construction zone is not a safe place. Drive carefully.
