Canon Guadalupe Torched

elchinero - 9-24-2007 at 02:09 PM

tony, we were pre-running for the code race this last week end, i strayed over to canyon guadalupe to show the boys
some place they have never seen............well, tues night it all burnt to the ground.looked bad we were there for about
an hour, pretty severe fire, everything went, palm trees, palapas, buildings, trucks, etc.

fdt - 9-24-2007 at 02:13 PM

All the campos ? They are pretty spread out. :?:

Taco de Baja - 9-24-2007 at 02:35 PM

To be expected when you build out of palm, in a palm canyon. All it takes is a careless spark.

Sad for the owner though.

bacquito - 9-24-2007 at 06:14 PM

Sorry to hear-It has been some time since I visited but I had planned a visit soon-oh well!

jeans - 9-24-2007 at 06:40 PM

Oh no!!! Any word on Arturo...is he OK? Other injuries? That was the most unique place I'd even been to....

Let's hope it was not a total loss...:?::?:

David K - 9-24-2007 at 08:03 PM

Talked with someone who knows, Arturo is okay... Palms and most palapas are burned as is the cantina... Sad...

bajabound2005 - 9-24-2007 at 08:20 PM

So, we thought there were a couple different camps there - and planning to head there in the next month or so? Is EVERYTHING gone? Or should we just go and report back. Beachbum1a: Isn't this the "destination spot"?

David K - 9-24-2007 at 08:26 PM

I am sure that Canyonman Rob and Arturo would love customers... They need $$$ to repair the palapas, etc. Arturo has been repairing the water lines that feed the tubs from the spring... So, maybe bring a tent for shade, shelter until the palapas are rebuilt...

bajaguy - 9-24-2007 at 08:28 PM

and plenty of Pacifico's if BB1A is going!!!...:lol::lol:

jeans - 9-24-2007 at 08:31 PM

CanyonmanRob tried to post....He told me the tubs would be filled this weekend (some pipes did melt, but he said they were easy to replace) and the repairs have been started.

He said there were no campers other than up at Castillo, so the fire is a mystery.

Natures revenge!

Hopefully, it will go back to its primitive state.

Maybe the gods will make it a Anasazi exclave rather than a tacky campground. Nothing less than a Beautiful, pristine canyon deserves.

CANYONMAN?

I talked to Arturo on his cell phone from the canyon. He and Rigo are OK.

Arturo has lost his house 3 time due to fire. Now he builds with cinder block

Guadalupe Canyon Fire

CANYONMANROB - 9-24-2007 at 09:00 PM

Fire was very bad, no one was injured. Hot tubs are OK. Some waterpipes were melted but are easy to replace.

Palms will grow back.

Arturo has lost his old wood houses and truck before from wild fires. his new house is made of block, cement and rock with a steel roof. It is OK.

the bathrooms and outhouse did not burn.

El Dorado, Castillo, San Marcos, Paloma and La Jolla camps were not harmed.

El Sol, El Mirador and La Cueva palapa and palms went up in smoke. Arturos store is wasted, all of Angels and Marios
camps and trees are gone. Ernesto south side of canyon also complety burned.

Maybe there will be a big flood next, wash the road away and people must walk in.

Wall Mart Family has made an offer the buy the entire canyon from the Loya family last year . Arturo said NO, but his brother wants to sell. Wall Mart wants all or nothing.

big parking lot? they can trim all the palm trees. no more big fires.

that's all I know

Thanks Rob... welcome to Nomad... wish it was under better circumstances!

The palms will come back in short order. Let us know when as the palapas get rebuilt.

Arturo's Campo #1 in Guadalupe Canyon is a beautiful place that is as close to being a natural setting while offering hot spring water to its private camp sites as I can imagine. The person who posted the negative comment above must have never seen it or spent any time there?

What caused the fire:(

marla - 9-27-2007 at 05:15 PM

wow that is really shocking but even more shocking is the idea that someone in the Wal Mart family wishes to buy the entire canyon! That's obscene. Rob, please elaborate!

edinnopolo - 9-27-2007 at 05:21 PM

You know the post states "TORCHED" with in my world means purpously set on fire.:?::?:
Never a word on what caused that fire.:?::?:

It's about time!!!

No not the fire, The Walmart. Hope they have a lunch counter.:lol:

Sorry for your losses.

Slowmad - 9-28-2007 at 01:46 PM

FYI, one of the Walmart clan gives in very aggressive ways to Baja conservation causes.

Ken Cooke - 9-28-2007 at 09:36 PM

Everyone will have to hike in except for the Rubicon Owners of California! We'll just leave our granola & hiking boots back at home! Let the nature people break a sweat!

Good to hear you guys are rebuilding and not selling out!!
