EL CENTRO, Calif.—Thieves fled to Mexico in a stolen U.S. Border
Patrol vehicle, an agency spokesman said Tuesday.
The vehicle was stolen Sunday in the Border Patrol's El Centro
sector, which encompasses eastern California's border with Mexico.
The sector includes the Imperial Sand Dunes, a desert playground for
off-road vehicle enthusiasts that attracts marijuana smugglers, and
the city of Calexico.

Border Patrol spokesman Enrique Lozano declined to elaborate on any
aspect of the theft, including the how, where and by whom the
vehicle was stolen. The agency has asked Mexican authorities for
help locating the vehicle and the thieves.

"Everything is under investigation and it's a very sensitive
matter," Lozano said.

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) - Three Mexican minors detained in California on
suspicion of smuggling drugs stole a U.S. Border Patrol car while still wearing
handcuffs and drove it back across the border to Mexico.

Police in the Mexican border city of Mexicali said on Tuesday the three boys had
been driving a pick-up truck on a remote Californian highway when a Border
Patrol agent stopped them.

Suspicious they were carrying marijuana, he handcuffed them and put them in his
patrol car while he searched their truck.

"As the agent was doing his search, he left the vehicle running and the keys in
the ignition, so one of the lads, still wearing handcuffs, grabbed the steering
wheel and they headed back to Mexico," a police spokesman said.

The Border Patrol, which plays cat and mouse around the clock with illegal
Mexican migrants and drug traffickers, confirmed the vehicle was stolen in
southern California on Sunday and driven over the border near Mexicali.

Mexican police used a helicopter to locate the patrol vehicle in a remote
agricultural area near the border.

B.P. agent made a bad mistake but due to the heat in the Imperial County he probably left the air conditioner on so he would not get into trouble for being inhumane towards the minors. Some days you can not win for losing!! This agent will definately be disciplined if not terminated over trying to be overly fair. His best deal would have been to handcuff them all together and use a set of leg chains on each so if they tried to run off good hopping. Too late for that and agents only get get handcuffs with no leg chains being issued for the field. I bet other agents will not be worried about heat issues for other illegals in the future. Glad nobody got wrecked into by these little crooks during their escape. A lot of what ifs could be written here but this is really a tough and demanding job with little being said in the way of "At a Boys." Too bad, as I have seen some really intense video on the attacks on agents on our borders, you would not believe how bad these drug and illegal runners put these agents in danger. Easy to laugh about things going bad but this job is really dangerous. I guess feeling bad for the crooks discomfort in the future is definately out of the question now. Later============bajafun777

How hot has it been the last few days in Imperial County? I can't imagine that after a hot pursuit and apprehension of three slimey drug smugglers, the BP would have their comfort in mind. It's nice that you would want to cut the guy some slack but, I don't think he deserves it. He screwed up badly, got careless.

Yeah, well, I don't know what your problem is but, you don't make any sense here. When did I comment on how police feel at a persons death? Never.
What was the body recovery you mention? Was this instance a body recovery? It should have been. The crappy little smugglers don't deserve life, let alone a free car to drive home in.
How many of these cases have I been involved in personally? None. I'm not a cop and I'm not an illegal drug smuggler. So what?
Oh, and please, cut the crap about professionalism and humanitarianism. You portray these guys as tour guides. Ask some of the detained about their hospitality. When you're done doing that, take your free spelling lesson and get off my back.

I bet they had the keys to their car in their pocket to boot! Too bad they probably didn't speak English well enough to use the radio and report a smuggler dressed in a border patrol uniform.

in all of my days of pulling up on scene, i NEVER saw a cop doing cpr or stabilizing a trauma patient. it ALWAYS seemed they were doing their traffic control, or witness statements. these are my generalizations.....your mileage may vary......

Well, I did not say the B.P. did not mess up. He should have cuffed them behind their backs and used the seatbelt, so they could not move about if he was going to utilize his vehicle. He should have waited for backup before he began the search, as the vehicle was not going anywhere with the knotheads in cuffs. Now, I have seen numerous officers in Imperial County put the crooks in their cage units with the air conditioner on. Officers down here get written up for not taking the heat into consideration during an arrest or detention issue. I have also had officers help stop bleeding until medical aide arrives, so Woody it does happen but not all the time. Again, I think B.P. and Customs are hiring rapidly and these young officers in their desire to please make some bad decisions that experience will teach them not to do, if they get by their mistakes. If I only had a dime for all the dumb things I did in my younger years trying to make a difference. It's like the saying goes "chit happens" and then you have to deal with it. When your young you want to do everything to get the bad guys and recover the big bust and this overly active desire more often than not leads young officers into very very gray areas that they have to improvise to get through. Again, some get by it or just the luck of the day and everything still goes down all good, what a great day when that happens. So, nothing to get upset over as these B.P. and Custom Officers have some of the toughest training out there. Their jobs are tough and questioned every time. "No fight be happy" "No Hurry, No Worry, Just Fun." :biggrin:

Bajafun777...your posts puts the best light on the matter and that should be good enough for most people...I can see myself doing a humane thing...but the world has changed and now there is no right thing...only protection for the good and BAD... If they are old enough to do wrong, then they are punks and should be treated that way...not abused. It seems to me without being there, none of us can make a judgement...besides is it all that important

all i tried to say was cops don't get their hands dirty where trauma/cpr is involved in my experience. i stand by that! i happened to work as a ff/emt in an unincorporated area so we were first in a lot (split time on the engine and ambulance, 20% of the time with no paramedics responding). capable? yes. when? who cares? what's that about anyway!

I appreciate the number though S&M is not to my style, they did however seem to know you well and speak highly of you. It's not that I am opposed to S&M, it just seems to be a aquired taste. I have always been a bit of a whimp, but "to each his own" and in this case "different strokes for different folks". They also said you had a great sense of humor and were a "real bundle of joy". I don't know what the "bundle of joy" part means, but that is between you and them.
