diving Asuncion - Diver? shari?

reefrocket - 9-26-2007 at 09:38 PM

I'm trying to convince my buddy that diving the islands would be good --- also is there dive air in town? We'll be comming from BoLA and have had problems getting air, in off season (febuary), there.

shari - 9-27-2007 at 02:30 PM

The diving is wonderful here and the islands have alot of neat sites, like the mystery cave, the steamship wreck and sea lion nursery. At this moment there isn't a compressor but we are working with some nomads here to get one up and running. In BOLA, Juan's cousin Ricardo can fill your tanks for ya...great free diving here...do you spearfish or sightsee? Amigos who dive all over the world love it here...nice thick kelp forests too. we'd be glad to show you the sights!

shari thank you for your reply! Kelp - yippie! caves, wrecks - goodie goodie. We have our own Achilies (sp) - 3 tanks ea. How is the water clarity in Feb.? In the S.o.C. it is usually cloudy as that's when everything spawns. In San Juanico we had even less vis. Not free divers. Yes hunters. Can't remember if you said you have camping? We have tent trailer and need really nothing (elec., water, ect.)
Sounds like we will be visiting you. Loreto area has out grown us (priced, peopled, attitude)
Somewhere I saw post on "Juan's cousin Ricardo" --how do I find his place? I may be looking at as, you say, "so dirt" need a place that doesn't snow:biggrin:
Thank you again Reefrocket

Oh yeah...I'm sure we'll hang out for a bit...maybe een gorf down some lobster..we will show some great camp spots once you get here..you can choose...I'll ask Juan about visibility and get back to you...make sue you have all the permits required to spearfish please... gypsy, maybe can give you directions to his house...

There are four ways to find Ricardo;

One look for the signs as you enter town...his place is up on a hill with a million dollar view.

Two go to the town library his wife is the town librarian.

Three, go to the marine institute near Diaz's place

Four, continue to Casa Lecocq, 9th house from town. Sam installed and maintains the compressor
(Sam also invented the single hose regulator- so he knows a little about diving)

Q?

Are you in Baja now? Or will you be there in February 2008?

BOLA is changing very fast..gas station, electrical, new paved roads, new hotels etc.

Ricardo is one of the best, most experienced divers in Baja, gives great personal service with new well maintained equipment.

Sam changed the course of recreational & commerical diving with his numerous contributions to the sport via his pioneering company "Sportsways." The development of the single hose regulator; the SPG, the contour back pack were only a few of his many contributions, there are many many more to numerous to mention.

He enjoys good red wine in the event you drop in on him..

Wow, that is so cool to hear about our cousin Ricardo...runs in the family I guess as Juan is one of the best commercial divers in these parts too. Their dads rocked! Ricardos padre is also a well know fishing guide as well there (Jose Rosas)...and cousin Anna has a nice little campground out by Daggetts too....the whole family are just super. We haven't been to BOLA in a few years and sounds like it's really progressing finally.

I can also say that Ricardo is fantastic. Just got back from our trip and spent two days with Ricardo, the first day he took us snorkling with the whale sharks, and sea lions, and then we got to see 5 fin back whales. The next day he took us diving, and it was spectacular. My husband is a dive master, and he said he was very very good and profesional. He is also a super nice guy, and his family is wonderful as well.

dean miller no not in baja till Feb. 08

changes in BoLA - I've heard - thats why I went by in Feb. 06 Now changes in Loreto -- will probably limit time in that area. We'll be scouting new areas (Asuncion & Agua Verde).

This time have got to meetRicardo

what kind of red wine?? also is Ricardo = Sam??

Most of my gear is so old he probably help design it.

Limited budget --any one have a price on his dive services?

thank you all for your responces ---very interesting!!

Sam Lecocq likes hearty strong reds...Of course French, but will graciously accept good California reds.

Sam & Recardo are friends

I can not advise as to Ricardos pricing. Only thing I had to pay for was Tee shirts and they are absolutely great in design and material and are certainly reasonably priced

Sam Lecocq was one of Rene Bussoz first employees at Aqua Lung, latter changed to US divers. When Rene sold to JY Cousteau in 1954, Rene advised Sam to leave..

Sam was a very active member of the French underground in WW11, the Marquis, and saw and experience more than any human should have. And of course Cousteau & family was Vichy French, the N-zi collaborators of France in WW11. His brother was a very vocal anti semite and was sentenced to death in 1946 after WW11 . So Sam & Cousteau would not get along.

Sam went to work for Dick Klein at Healthways as an engineer.

They formed Sportsways in 1958, which introduced the US to the tilt valve single hose regulator, along with many other unique products all well made and ahead of their time. The company was sold in the late 1960s

Sam then designed a number of products for Chuck Smiley's company White Stag which had a product line called DEEP; Diving E quipment Designed for Professionals.

That was his last recreational venture. He entered the commercial market manufacturing commercial scrubbers.

I would seriously doubt that you would be using any of his original equipment, but the equipment you are using have inovations introduced to the market by Sam such as the O ring, the balanced first stage,SPGs, etc ..

Enjoy your visit,
