Now that getting a ham license is easier than ever (NO code test), folks should consider getting a ham license. Tests are administered by volunteers
and pretty user friendly. Study materials abound to be used with your computer. With a general class ham license you can contact people all over the
world with a radio as small as a CB radio. Hams in the US do phone patches and there are Baja radio Nets that will seek out folks with emergency
communication. Also, with a laptop and a ham radio it is very easy to connect to the Internet and do e-mail just as though you were sitting at home.
Works in canyons, on mountains, on the water, etc. And...it's free. There cannot be a charge for this e-mail etc. You just cannot use ham radio for
business purposes. Many boaters use their ham radio to keep in touch in very remote areas and also driving up and down the peninsula. It takes a bit
of effort (not much anymore) and you are always in touch (if you want to be). Jack N1IY |
