I flew Alaska one month ago and on the return flight to Loreto there was one small dog traveling with the check-in luggage. I remember because they
brought his kennel with the rest of the baggage and put the poor guy on the carosel between bags where he rode round and round, inside the terminal
then back out in the 95°+ heat. He probably went around 5 times.
One more revolution and I was going to break out of the immigration line take him off myself.DrTom - 10-14-2007 at 05:46 PM

Believe me, you would not want to ship your pet as air cargo. No airline will take them as cargo. You may fly Alaska with your pet as checked
luggage.
Air cargo may sit in the airport for days before it is shipped.

I am fairly certain animals cannot be shipped out of Mexico unaccompanied.....I used to help people who wanted to adopt dogs in Todos Santos try to
get them stateside, and I flew a few of them back and forth myself. Admittedly, I haven't done this in two years, but what I found out was this -
Alaska Air will let you fly with your dog in the cabin if it and the carrier weighs less than 18 lbs, and the carrier has to fit beneath the seat in
front of you. If you have to have them fly in the cargo bay, which is climate controlled, believe it or not, you have to make a reservation first, as
they can only take so many pets per flight....then pay for their ticket when you check in, but you can't check the animal in for the flight until 30
minutes before take off.
America West will allow pets in the cabin only.
AeroMexico, or Mexicana Airlines, can't remember which, will only allow pets in the cargo area.
Not sure of regulations with other airlines....I know some of them won't allow pets in the cargo hold anymore because of past problems.....or some of
them won't allow cargo travel during the summer months due to the heat.
For the small animals, it is very important that you make reservations for the animal as soon as possible, because they only allow 2 or 3 animals in
the cabin per flight, and it's a crap shoot if you wait until you check in for your flight...it seems more people nowadays are flying with pets.
Alaska Air also charges the least amount for pet travel too.....
We flew Alaska last Tuesday (Oct 9th), San Francisco to SJD, non stop. Our dog travelled in a crate as luggage, there was another dog as well. We
paid $100 one way. She had a good trip and caused much laughter with the Time share folks in the SJD terminal. Alaska has addded a libility form for
the owner to sign, the form is affixed to the crate to assure the receiving airport that the owner was avised about heat and air travel difficulities
for pets. Our dog is an English Bull Dog, she does OK in the heat, some other dogs may have more difficulty then our dog. Good luck, Joanna
