Southern CA Campgrounds ?

Diver - 10-8-2007 at 03:15 PM

We are looking for a place to meet the folks on the way south this year. Maybe in Chula Vista or San Diego area. We need to find one with hotel rooms or cabin with baths or kitchenettes. Somewhere we can camp and they can also stay, maybe with a pool and park-like surroundings ??
Maybe I'm asking for too much ?
Anyone have any suggestions ??
Thanks

Best I can think of is the San Diego KOA. 20 min from downtown San Diego, 8 min from the border, has RV sites, tenting and 1 & 2 bedroom panabode cabins. Heated pool & big hot tub. We stay there often.

Diver....
That SD KOA Barry talks about is a good one. Near everything.

A couple of campgrounds/RV parks on 94 between San Diego and Tecate. Never stayed there but they look nice. You guys could hook up there and then cross at Tecate.

Minnow - 10-8-2007 at 04:00 PM

El Potrero near tecate.

Diver - 10-8-2007 at 04:45 PM

Unfortunately the San Diego Koa and Potrero County Park don't have cabins or rooms with baths which are needed for the old folks. Last resort will be a hotel near an RV Park or campground.

Vagabond Inn.... "E" and Broadway, Chula Vista. 4 or 5 miles from the KOA. Tell them you live in Baja for a discount. 50 bucks per night. I've stayed there a lot.

how about that place on the san diego bay...it's close

it's by seaworld...is that still open???

Iflyfish - 10-8-2007 at 11:50 PM

Newport Bay Resort, on Newport Bay, in Newport right on the bay, close to Balboa. Has pool, hot tub, beach, restaurant, cabins for family. we stayed there for two months last winter while Mrsfish had Spinal Decompression done at a local clinic.

If it's Campland, I hope you like hoards of pre-teens on skateboards and BMX bikes, cause they will be there on the weekends. OK mid-week, since school has started.

Diver - 10-9-2007 at 01:37 PM

Yikes !!
$91 per night for camping and $200 for a cabin at Newport !!
Too rich for my blood !

Campland is too ..... for us.

So far it looks like the KOA with the older folks staying at a nearby Marriott.
And they think the Marriott is "roughing it" !

If you are near a bookstore, cruise in and check out "California Camping" by Tom Stienstra. I've found the California and Northwest editions to be very helpful. The Baja one was not that helpful IMO.

The book gives reviews of campgrounds (1-10), directions, descriptions, and list services available.

It might help. I'd look though my copy and give you advice; but, it's currently lent to a friend.

Might be a little too far north, but if youre considering Newport, how about Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. Close by on coast hwy (within 1- 2 miles from the park) are several decent hotels with pools overlooking the ocean.

Hook - 10-9-2007 at 04:18 PM

How about San Clemente State Beach and check grandma and grandpa into the Riveria Motel?

Seriously though, Doheny is not a bad option but it books up well in advance unless you can do mid-week.

Hows about you replan your start time so you end up at the Bahia in Ensenada?

Diver ,

this is where I'd stay

I-5 south, take J-st. exit, turn right (west) and you're almost there. Clean , easy on/ off freeway, large park , marina, West Marine store close.10 minutes to the border , 3 minutes to the best place in San Diego county to eat breakfast.

Try the Goodnite Inn for the ol folks. Close by

Where would that be, Lero?

Diver - 10-9-2007 at 05:39 PM

Thanks
We've stayed at the Chula Vista RV Park for 1 nighters before crossing but I always feel a bit young to be there. I'm only in my 50's !
One time they had a band near the pool and my son got to sing into a banana microphone. He wanted the cucumber microphone but some 80 year old guy wouldn't give it up !

I like the idea but fortunately or unfortunately, my dad won't fit through the door of our camper. 5'10" and 350# does not make for a good RV'er !!
But maybe they will take the kids to the hotel ?!

Just another good excuse to upgrade to a RV with a "toy hauler" rear door. ;)

DENNIS - 10-9-2007 at 07:23 PM

nasty.....

Bajafun777 - 10-9-2007 at 07:31 PM

Too bad you do not belong to Thousand Trails, I use it a lot and share with my relatives and it has most of what your wanting. You can go online and find some really good buys on Thousand Trails. You pay nothing for your trailer stays up to 2 weeks in the park and then on to another park for another 2 weeks, etc, etc., etc. Really, too bad you can not get them to go down to just before you enter Ensenada from Rosarito, as you could stay at "Baja Seasons." This place has everything you described and more like the beach just steps away:D. However, the Chula Vista R.V. is really nice and safe to walk about even at night:tumble:. Yeh Bajafun, I wish I could get them to cross the border but they say 'No way !"
Although I'm sure that if I hold their grandkids in Baja long enough, they will come.

We paid $500 for a month at Newport Dunes in our 24' motor home, wonder if they raised prices? See if you can talk with the manager, some of the staff there are clueless, totally clueless.

May be open to some negotiation. Different rows, different cabins?
