What's the difference? Is one or the other better to have in Baja Sur?
A neighbor on a nearby rancho just bought a movistar phone but no service at his ranch or adjacent hill tops. He asked if I'd buy it from him but I
didn't know what's up with Movistar.
Any info appreciated...

I was just in La Paz last week and bought a Telcel phone- cheap-$40 for phone and `100 pesos of airtime. the phone was an inexpensive Nokia, but had
loads of features and allowed me to convert to English, had a calculator, and text mesage feature. reception was great between La paz and Cabo- 5 bars
the whole time-- don't know about anywhere else but for my few weeks a year in Baja sur this will work just great as I buy minutes as I need them--

I have Telcel. All my Mexican compadres convinced me that Moviestar was inferior to Telcel for use in the Baja.
I have Telcel "pay as you use" plan. It is 30 cents US per minute which ain't cheap, but I only use about 20 minutes a month so it is not costly
overall. There is no monthly service charge for the pay as you go plan. The Samsung phone was 300 pesos but they gave me 300p of talk time so the
phone was free. The Samsung phone works great! It has all the common features and the menu is in English. Que bueno!

I started out years ago with Baja Cellular. Oki Analog Bag Phone and a 12db Yagi antenna. After Movistar bought out Baja Cellular, the service
steadily went downhill. Erratic service. In San Felipe, you never knew when the office would be open, posted hours notwithstanding. After I went in
one day to buy some prepaid cards and they told me to try the Liquor store because they didn't have any or know when they'd get them, I gave up.
I've had Telcel prepaid service for over three years. No complaints . No doubt, Movistar has improved since then, but I still hear complaints. Why
bother ?

Both companies have coverage maps at:

(click on "coverage map" then zoom in).
Of course take both with a large pinch of salt - local hills may block reception, and on the plus side coverage may now be further than shown.

Sitting with a friend in La Paz yesterday as he tried over and over to make a call on his new moviephone.....never got the call thru.....just some
bizarre message. And that was in the middle of downtown.....doesn't sound like very good coverage to me.

I have ATT cell with the Mexico plan for use in the San Felipe area. Telcel occassionally takes a hissy fit
and blocks calls from the US. At those times I manually change my phone over to Moviestar coverage and things
again work fine.

My movistar phone works great. The cost to call the States is about 14 pesos for 30 minutes. I belive it is 5 pesos per call in Mexico. If you make
alot of call in Mexico, the other phones are cheaper.
