SAN DIEGO - A 10-mile toll road in southeast San Diego near the U.S.-Mexico border is
slated to open next month, nearly 50 years after it was first proposed, it was announced
today.
The South Bay Expressway, San Diego's first toll road, will begin accepting traffic on Nov.
19.
The $635 million project, an extension of state Route 125, will bisect Chula Vista and end
at state Route 905 near the Mexico Border, according to officials with the South Bay
Expressway.
"This road has been a long time coming and will greatly reduce commute times across the
region," South Bay Expressway Chief Executive Officer Greg Hulsizer said in a statement.
The project has been planned since 1959.
Tolls will range from $1.50 to $3.50, according to South Bay Expressway's Web site.
Neighborhood trips will cost 75 cents.
The tollway, built under a public and private partnership, will operate as a toll road for 35
years, when the state will take ownership.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the toll road's opening will be held on Nov. 16 at 10
a.m.

Al, thanks for posting the reason for your question!
This new highway will take people right to the Otay Border area from the inland areas of south San Diego County (incl. Lemon Grove, El Cajon, Santee).
It also is a way to avoid the PM traffic to Baja on I-5 or I-805... Take the 52, 94, or I-8 east to the 125 and go south to the Otay Border...
Returning from Baja at Otay, no more stop lights getting to I-805 that The Bajarunner hates... Just head north on the 125 to the 52 and that swings
west to I-15, I-805, I-5.
