Boaters stuck at San Marcos Island

Pescador - 10-23-2007 at 05:19 AM

Sunday the wind started blowing at 11:00 am and caught most people unaware. Bouyweather had predicted a big blow but sometimes they can miss a little and it looked so calm out there. Bill and Bonnie (the boat mechanic at San Lucas Cove) was trying out a customers boat and developed engine problems. When the wind started howling, they were able to limp in to a semi-protected area just south of the West Light on San Marcos Island. Carlos Garces from the Comsa Mine sent several youngsters up with some food and water, and we have been in radio contact, but the wind and waves are so bad that we have been unable to get a boat up to pull them in. Hopefully today, Tuesday, we can get a boat to them and evacuate them. Even for those who like boat rides, this one has to be really tough to just sit there and rock in the wind all day and night, and we just feel totally helpless when stuck to the beach.:(

Ted and Judy Lawler went out from Pto Escondido Sunday on a 15 footer. Let's hope they found a rock to hang on to. Still out as far as I know. Not good looking water to be on since Sunday midday.

Pescador , How are Bonnie and Bill?

Well, all's well that ends well. We tried to see if we could get to them this morning but the San Marcos Taxi was leaving the marina and going 5 foot in the air off of the swells and the waves were crashing over the rock wall. But one of the guys from the mine made it up to where they were stuck and hauled them back to the mine, then they came over on the water taxi late this afternoon and are safe and secure at home now.

Hey Jim
Sorry to hear about Bill and Bonnie. Hope they are okay. Really windy over here is SC too. Doesn't seem as bad as your report at least today but yesterday and day before really rough.

Water temps are really dropping too.

What happened? They back yet? Seems this blow caught a lot of people off guard. I got caught out there once 40 to 50 mph straight off the beach. 10 ft rollers in just a couple of minutes. If you lost your motor you would have been lucky to stay afloat. It took an hour to make it to the haystack from the North island. That was Thanksgiving day 1992.
