That is horrible news.

vandenberg - 10-23-2007 at 05:20 PM

Simpler

I just received a phone call from Jeanne Reilly stating that Ted and Judy Lawler took their 15' Sea Ray out of Puerto Escondido on Sunday. They were told the weather was going to change and not to be gone long. They are still missing. Their vehicle is still parked at Puerto Escondido. Right now there are helicopters taking big horn sheep off Carmen and are on the look out for the missing boaters. Also, there is suppose to be an airplane taking off soon to conduct a search. No one knows if they went north or south; only that they left from Puerto Escondido. They do not have a working radio on the boat or cell phone with them. If anyone plans on going out fishing, etc. after the wind stops, please keep an eye out for them. Their family has been notified. If anyone has more news, please let me know so that I can pass it on to everyone. __________________________________________________

A warning to all who venture out on the water.
Never, never, never, never go out without a radio. And as soon as you clear the harbor call for a radio check, just to make sure the sucker works.
Speaking from experience.

David K - 10-23-2007 at 05:23 PM

Would they have made it to Agua Verde in the time before the winds began... The islands or coast south of Ensenada Blanca would be places to look, perhaps?.

Minnow - 10-23-2007 at 05:26 PM

Send out the NOmads!!!!!

Sallysouth - 10-23-2007 at 07:14 PM

Wow that is bad."taking Big horn sheep off of Carmen"?? Did not know there were any there and why are they doing that if they ARE there? What does that have to do with the missing couple????God, I hope they just found a hidden cove and decided to "HIDE OUT"!!And yes we all need to have a radio or something to communicate with when venturing out on the SOC.Believe me,I posted a few years back about a trip out of Puerto Escondido, supposed to be a day trip, ended up a near disaster.Thank God we had a radio!!Hope they are ok......:?:

vandenberg - 10-23-2007 at 07:52 PM

Sally,
Bighorn were re introduced to Carmen years ago and the last I heard, the herd "took"and enlarged substantially. While I've never seen it, there is fresh water on the island. They must have decided to take some of them somewhere else and while the choppers were in the air could at the same time look for the missing boaters.:?::?:

Sallysouth - 10-23-2007 at 10:36 PM

Vandenberg, Very interesting indeed. How strange that they would "re-locate" the sheep !What? Pick them up by helicopter, (not gonna happen unless they tranquilze them) and take them where? The Gigantes have their own herds, very much watched and protected by the Ejidos and gov, from what I remember my son-in -law telling me.He is a guide and arranges the yearly hunts for the Loreto/La Paz areas. To re-locate these aminals would be a very risky thing to do.Can I ask where you got this info from? Also, where IS the fresh water?? Never seen it either. And I hear they are selling islands around there!!!I'm IN!!!

Bob and jane - 10-24-2007 at 06:41 AM

The fresh water is to the west and south along the cove in front of the abandoned salt mine on Carmen. Some of the old buildings there have been renovated to house the sheep hunters who pay big dollars to come and bag one, under strict supervision. This was all explained to us by the caretaker at the salt mine, who comes from Ligui. The owner of the buildings and, I guess, the old mine, comes from the mainland. I can't remember right now which city.
And, not to hijack this thread, my best wishes for the missing couple and their families. Let's hope for "un milagro."

vandenberg - 10-24-2007 at 07:44 AM

Always heard that the Salinas de Cortari family owned Carmen.:?::?:
Maybe just during his reign as the crooked president.:?::?:

Haven't heard any news about the fate of the missing boaters.

shari - 10-24-2007 at 07:49 AM

I am very worried about this couple, if they didn't have a radio they probably didn't have emergency gear either. Once again I wish to stress the importance of telling someone your "sail plan" or at least where you plan to go...and yes, always take a radio, extra water and food, blanket just in case. I know baja addicts are loners but those of us who have to get a search together would appreciate this info and it may just save your life.

Al G - 10-24-2007 at 08:59 AM

Hoping for the best for Ted and Judy...cannot wait for their safe return.

PS...Sally, I am sure the herd reduction is because of protecting the limited resources on Carmen. The herd could be wiped out if their numbers grow to large and the resources should become depleted.

bearbait1 - 10-24-2007 at 10:00 AM

This has to be so scary for family and friends of the lost couple. One good thing is that with the warm water they could survive quite awhile if they are in the water.

"To re-locate these aminals would be a very risky thing to do" What? Sheep are relocated all the time, that's how they got to the island in the first place.

Yep, they pull up in a helo, net them with a type of cannon that shoots out a net, Hook them up, and haul them to a staging area, where they are shipped off to repopulate other areas. Happens all the time around Vegas. No anestesia necessary. I would not be surprised if the sheep on Carmin were from the same line as those around LV.

Any word on Ted and Judy?

backninedan - 10-24-2007 at 12:59 PM

I just came back from the marina and the guards there had not anything as of noon today. The wind is kicking up again, so any boat search will be hampered. I did see a chopper flying around, not sure if they are part of the search or not.

fdt - 10-24-2007 at 02:24 PM

Is the helicopter looking further south?

As for the sheep, we talked about the hunting season on Isla del Carmen opening during our show.

rescue

tehag - 10-24-2007 at 04:09 PM

eMail just received:

I just finished talking to Dirk Swanson who was one of the many people involved with the rescue of Ted & Judy Lawler. Involved in the rescue was the Port Captain and his staff; the Proteccion Civil Director and his staff; the assistance and direction of the Municipio, Dr. Collins; Alexander Ogilvy, Leon of Baja Outpost; Scott Serven; Rich and Ellyn Reitan; Jeanne Reilly; Mario at the airport facility for smaller aircraft; and the many many other volunteers. They all worked together to make this a happy ending.

Ted and Judy went to Monserrate and decided to leave because the wind was picking up. The motor died and they managed to get back to the north side of Monserrate (I'm sure the wind helped). They spent three nights on the island. They did have water and a little food. They are fine and back at home here in Loreto and very grateful for all who helped them and the prayers.

vandenberg - 10-24-2007 at 04:14 PM

Thanks Tom.
Glad everything turned out alright.
You're not allowed too many missteps on the ocean.
Very unforgiving.

Skipjack Joe - 10-24-2007 at 04:34 PM

That's great news. After all the trouble up north it's good to read a news story with a happy ending.

toneart - 10-24-2007 at 05:10 PM

Very good news indeed! Although I don't know Ted and Judy, it could have been any one of us with boats. It's nice they had Nomads, other friends and rescue personnel concerned and searching.

Last year I bought a kicker motor from Octavio, the same guy I bought the panga from a couple of years ago. Everyone in Mulege knows him. Anyway, when I started to tell him in Spanish why I wanted a kicker motor, he cut me off and said in English, "I know!---no want go Guaymas." ;)

bacquito - 10-24-2007 at 05:15 PM

Great news and something to remember!

Tony......
If it happens, take a phone and stay in touch. I know of a place in Guaymas where you can spend the night and you won't want to leave.

SiReNiTa - 10-24-2007 at 05:22 PM

ay ay ay i'm glad this sea story turned out well...as i started reading i thought oh no not another one...the ocean is n0ot forgiving, but maybe that's what makes it so fascinating...

Hook - 10-24-2007 at 07:08 PM

Glad it all turned out OK, but if they wuz teenagers, they'd be grounded.

Congratulations to the rescuers!!!

So, how were they eventually discovered???

Sallysouth - 10-24-2007 at 07:16 PM

This is such wonderful news! Glad they are safe and back home. Next time out on the SOC, I sure hope they take a radio....

Minnow - 10-24-2007 at 07:18 PM

Anyone see the Discovery Channel special on the fishermen who got stranded on La Guarda?

No. Was it the incident involving pangueros off one of the motherships? Did a guy die?

Minnow - 10-24-2007 at 07:26 PM

No, these guys got off safe, but it was close. They were there for over a week and were down to drinking their own urine. I think the series was called Amazing survival stories.

Wiles - 10-24-2007 at 08:11 PM

Dennis,
That gives a whole new meaning to "any port in a storm". What a warm, fuzzy feeling!
