After two weeks of industry association meetings, including 8 days in Puerto Rico, and a week with fires all around us (everything is OK), I desperately needed a pier dive fix. It was a day for fringeheads, including a VERY mellow one-spot in a recently discarded Parrot Bay rum bottle:

Pretty good viz for Morbid Bay.

I used to enjoy diving the power plant outlet, warm water and a free ride!

I like Port San Luis for halibut.

Fantastic as always, Ken! Those creatures were as desperately waiting to be photographed as you were desperate to get down there...

Thank you once more, Ken, for bringing the fabulous undersea world to our computers. Some of those creatures are never seen by most of us. Brilliant camera work!

What is the name of that thing in the bottle? I googled one-spot but it didn't show up there. Is it a fish, a mollusk, an eel? How does it get into such a tight space. I'm fairly certain it didn't grow that bottle. Does it back in or is it small enough to swim in and turn around.

I guess I'm hung up on the minutia of logistics.

Thank you all for the kind words. toneart the thing in the bottle is a fish, common name one-spot fringehead, scientific name Neoclinus uninotatus. I have seen them enter their lairs (bottles, tubes, pipes, etc.) both forward and backwards. It's quite a sight to see them back in, but they can do it. Looks like this one has just about overgrown its rum bottle and will soon need to look for a larger home. Paulina y Dern, next scheduled MB trip is November 28 and 29 with Gary. Hope to see you guys then.

No doudt the camera you use is probably high end . Can you recommend an underwater camera or case / camera set up that would be affordible and sutible for snorkling . Thanks , you do have awesome pictures.

tortuga - I have seen outstanding underwater photos made with (relatively) inexpensive point and shoot digital cameras. I have to admit I don't know much about them, other than the fact that you can get good results with them snorkeling or on scuba. I would suggest that you take a look at this Ikelite website:

Ikelite makes affordable and reliable housings for virtually all of the available P&S cameras. If you have a digital P&S camera you might want to put it in an Ikelite housing. In any event you can get a lot of information from this Ikelite website. I wish I could help more

You may have to go back later and liberate that one-spot fringehead from his rum bottle home if he gets any bigger.
