passports

Smoke - 11-11-2007 at 04:34 PM

Anyone recently applied for and /or received a passport. Is there still a back log, how long did it take?

We just got one for our daughter last month. We paid extra for a quicker return. It took 4 weeks.

The post office said it would take 6 weeks but it came back in four.

non expidited passports are taking 2-3 months

expidited service is $60 extra and you "go to the front of the line"

My husband and I applied for ours in mid September. He paid for the expedited service since he was planning on traveling to Baja in October. Funny thing is....since our passports had been processed together, we got them back together, in less than 2 weeks. (Wisconsin)

One of our sons just recently applied (it went through the Seattle office) and he had it in two weeks. Just this past week our other son applied and he was told it would be the first of January. Hope it's sooner. We're going on a cruise right after that.

Paid the extra cash, less than two weeks.

you guys ALL "went to the front of the line"

there are ONLY three places in the USA that
actually "make" the passports

the passports are first all sent to one place
then they are shipped to the other two based on workload

if you give you application to a "postal employee"
the passport agency (with contract employees)
can mail a passport back within two weeks

i just "wonder" (just wondering:saint::saint: )
how really "secure" it really makes us in the USA;)

Purchased passports for the kids two weeks ago today and recieved them in lnine days. We paid for the expedited service.

I know you can get a passport in one day at the federal building in Los Angeles- But it is a long day of sitting there!

From the State Department web site:

"At this time, we are processing routine applications within four to six weeks of receipt. We are processing requests for expedited service within three weeks.

If you are traveling or need your passport in order to get a visa within the next 2 weeks:

Please call us at the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) to schedule an appointment to apply in person at a Passport Agency (please see note below).

If you have already applied but will not need your passport within the next two weeks:

There should be no need to contact us at this time. Our goal is to make sure that no one misses a trip. We have added staff and are working overtime across the country to achieve this goal.

Checking the status of your application: You can check the status of your application online. Currently, it is taking 5-7 days for applications to be tracked online. It may take less time if you paid for Expedite Service and sent your application via overnight delivery."

Interesting...

The border agent at Nuevo Mexicali told me as we crossed that even expired passports will be excepted for crossing back into the U.S. from Mexico, but other countries will not be accepting them.

My passport is two years old and does not have the electronic capability, and neither does my wifes, however her son just recieved his and it does. Having the old type of Passports will slow the process down as the information has to be typed into their computers.
