Contaminated runoff forces beach closures

TIJUANA RIVER VALLEY: County health officials closed beaches near the border yesterday after sewage-contaminated runoff from the Tijuana River entered
the ocean.
Clay Clifton of the county's Department of Environmental Health said rainfall amounts in the Tijuana watershed Sunday were about one-tenth of an inch
and that the contaminated runoff entered the Pacific Ocean and the Tijuana Estuary on Monday.
Ocean currents then moved the contaminated flows from the river's mouth to the southern end of Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach.
Closure signs posted yesterday will remain in place until tests indicate the ocean is safe for recreational use. –J.Z.
