I agree,

BMG - 12-18-2007 at 07:51 AM

the shot of the heron is really nice.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but I was reading today about some new mammal and birds they've recently discovered in Indonesia. This one of a dove is just spectacular.

Pompano, Not too often. Usually after I see something like your photo I see these:
BMG, hijack away. Great looking dove.

Russ, I made a video tutorial on how to post more than one photo on one post. Here is the link:

Best training video yet. I wish I had 1/2 your skills. I did look into this when you first posted but with a Mac and Hughesnet it's way slow. I'll try it again and see how it goes. Thanks
I did put your video in my favorites so I can work with it easily now.

That's a very nice picture Woody. It conveys real well how flight must feel. It's no wonder that some of my happiest dreams are of soaring.

Does anyone know the name of the seagull type bird that pesters the pelicans. I think there is one in Woody's pic. Great shot Woody!

Is it an immature seagull?

Russ - 12-21-2007 at 07:28 AM

Might be. But there is one gull type that will sit on a pelicans head to get scrapes.

BajaHawk - 12-21-2007 at 10:20 PM

Heermann's Gulls are the bird you are thinking of. Check this link - a GREAT resource for bird info.

Russ - 12-22-2007 at 06:38 AM

Good source. I'll go and look for the one I'm thinking of. They're about have the size of that gull and appear to be all dark. Better yet I'll try to get a photo of one. Thanks for the site to explore birds on.
Two hours later and I've not come up with the bird I want. The Heermann's Gull has the right habits but does look quite right. The Sooty Shearwater looks right but nothing is mentioned about pestering pelicans. Photo of the Shearwater:

Here's a pic of the guy I'm talking about. Bad lighting so the shot isn't too clear.

Good Shot! They sure do look clumsy.

Wind gusts to 38mph so far. Great day for a book.

That picture posted by Pompano is a Pelicant not a Pelican.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Wiles - 12-25-2007 at 08:50 PM

Russ,

In Woody's picture there are 7 brown pelicans, 2 Heerman's gulls ( 1 juvenile & 1 adult) and 3 cormorants (double crested).

Shearwaters and the rest of the tubenoses are pelagic seabirds spending the majority of their time in open waters.

Hope this helps.

gringorio - 12-25-2007 at 10:25 PM

great shot Russ!
