Isla Cedros

Anyone here been to Cedros Island.. I'd like to go there on a fishing trip. Would love any info I can get. Especially where I might leave my truck at Eugenia/Turtle Bay while I'm on the Island...Thanks

I landed on Cedros on my way to Natividad--the airplane goes out of the(Navy?) Ensenada airport south of town...if you can get a ride to the airport somehow, you could leave your truck in the US, as another option.

I would guess that you could leave your truck with whomever you fish with.
If you want to fly, there used to be flights out of Guerrero Negro.

Isla Cedros has amazing people, a successful community and is perhaps the largest supplier of salt to the US and Japan. In fact you might confuse its mountains of salt for ski slopes. There is an airport and flights can be purchased directly from the office to fly to ensenada. There is a ferry service for vehicles. The Island has very few trees and is quite barren but the people are not in need of much with a rich fishing cooperative and salt manufacturing industry.

Punta Eugenia just to the south is a short distance from Bahia Tortuga and while being close to Cedros its is quite different in personality. It is also quite barren and by the way quite far from most things. On its beaches you might find refuse from any where in the world, a hat from japan, a box from california or who knows.

In Punta Eugenia live the Arce families and they have pangas and I believe have constructed one or two palapas for visitors. One would need to lower expectations or much better just show up, though in general they go fishing almost every day and thats about it. You could leave your car safely and get a ride. They do not speak english.

I thought you needed a permit to go onto the island (?) Would any Arces give me a ride to Malarrimo Beach?

Cedros is a huge island, it has imigration offices, port captain (at the top of the hill), fishing fleets, airport, salt factory, etc... You can buy a house there. Are you thinking of another smaller island?

The Arces are trying to grow into tourism with the ejido in Eugenia, but keep in mind that although the weather can be nice, it receives the brunt of exposed weather, the off shore area is known as one of the most dangerous which turns quickly with no protection except la bahia Tortuga y puerto Cedros with winds 20-40 knots on occasion and there are uncharted submerged rocks off shore. I can't give you weather pattern info just be aware its no joke and there no tourists places or big stores. Many boats have been lost off shore there.

Side note, since in Mexico when you marry you take the name of the husband and wife there are many people with name Senior y Seniora Arce Arce and even Arce-Arce Smith for example, so when I go there I say my name is Senior Arce-Arce Arce-Arce de San Pancho, seems to open doors, haha.

Las familias Arces on the point have good friends of mine for a long time and very sincere and nice people. If you are seriously in need of something there and can pay then I will give you their daughter's phone number who knows some english, just understand, its not helpful to ask a bunch of gringo questions like what is the GNP of the city and what is weather like and can you book a reservation on a panga... Just go there check it out and then leave or marry an Arce and stay.

A panga will take you as far as you are willing to pay for the gas and the return gas and pay the driver and crew a good daily wage which means most day trips, in my estimation cost about $150-200.

Actually the island's name means cedar in spanish--which may have come from the populations of California Juniper on the island but more likely from the Monterey Pine forests at the higher elevations where fog condensation makes up for the lack of rainfall, thereby enabling relic populations to exist. There is also an endemic Cedros Live Oak, in addition to the more usual Baja vegetation at lower elevations. You wouldn't know it from looking at the island from a distance though--it does look barren!

Yes, it is a magnificent view from the Monterey Pine forest atop the narrow ridge on Cedros. Well worth every precarious step up the mountain....and there are many...whew!

I went to Cedros in Sept. We were planning a four day charter for albacore, but the albacore had moved out. The skipper had heard from a long range boat that they had a great bite on yellowtail at Cedros. It took us 31 hours from San Diego, but well worth it. We had solid yellowtail fishing all day. We counted 68 fish 20+lbs. We did have live bait Four of the locals came by in a panga & asked us for a beer. No problem. The trip reminded me of the old days at the Coronados.

there is a really nice couple in tortugas who maybe you can leave your truck with safely...they own the tackle shop and can also help you out with logisitcs...Isabel Piñuelas and her email is isabelpinuelas@hotmail.com if it doesn't work, try it with .mx after it and tell her shari gave you her address...please be cautious in the turtle bay area as I have heard reports of thefts.

Isabel and her American husband Russ are the ones Shari told me about for people to contact to bring down school supplies on our boat trip. I met them about a week ago when we brought stuff down. She will email you back and speaks excellent English. They were delightful people when we met them and I would not have any second thoughts about contacting them.
Also, who ever is going to fly there, please do a report. We want to fly there from Palomar when we get back form the boat trip.
