Northern Arizona from a Baja Nut's Camera

David K - 11-29-2007 at 07:16 PM

Okay, after seening Baja Ken's Colombia and Peru photos that shows we Baja nuts can have fun in 'other' places... Here are a few photos of some of where Baja Angel and I went the week of the Baja 1000...

Since the Grand Canyon was perfect for photography that day, with super clear skys, I will show a couple from that day, there...

Yes, we were there... It was a fun day, arriving on the train (Grand Canyon Railroad) from Williams... A really great package deal for a quick visit... 2 nights at a very nice hotel, round trip train ride, gun fight and train robbery action, 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts... for under $400.

Nice weather you had! Did they have the new exhibit open - the one that juts way out over the edge of the canyon?
Bob H

Here's one of mine from about two years ago... you can see the Colorado River in this one...

Thanks for posting the pix..

Yea David, that train ride to the Grand Canyon is really relaxing and you can walk from car to car with a drink in one hand and food in the other, if you so desire. My wife and I actually meant the owner and his wife on the train and they we down to earth folks and enjoyed talking and carrying on with everyone. The Grand Canyon pictures are always something that makes you think just how small we are in this world. Later-----bajafun777

Dave and Baja Angel:

Did you see my daughter, Ranger Amala? She works at the North Rim in the Summer (until mid October) and then works at the South Rim in the Winter.

Did you see any condors?

Bob, that skywalk is on the indian tribal property about 200 miles to West and has nothing to do with Grand Canyon National Park.

Where did you book this trip through and from where? Sounds great! Would love more info. Thanks.

Thanks Steve - I knew it wasn't in the park but I did not know it was 200 miles away.

wrong. i flew to grand canyon west airport to watch Robbie Knievel jump the canyon, its next to the skywalk which wasn't under const then. The Indians have now taken over that airport and if you want to land there they extract a $100 landing fee if you don't pay for the skywalk disney ride.
its not 200 miles from south rim's other disney ride stuff, much closer.
Eff the indians for jacking up the landing fees. and initiating an extortion program.:fire:

Could it be that the one ranger I caught in a photo was her?

This ranger was setting up the telescope and Baja Angel had a look...

I was really impressed with the whole operation, hotel, meals, train ride... We just showed up at the motel without reservations for anything and got in, no problem. The upgrade to first class lounge car was not available... but the standard car was fine and you can walf to the 'cantina' car for drinks and food.

We heard about it from Baja Angel's mother when we visited her in Henderson, NV our first days of vacation...

Here is the web site: http://www.thetrain.com/

Photo of the train engine at the Grand Canyon... the view point is up by that old hotel in the background... We took the rim trail hike... about 2 hours... was perfect!

I was lucky enough to be assigned at "the Canyon" (S. rim)for about year way back in 1967 as a permanent Ranger-----------it is truly a magical place, and the longer you are there the more magical it is---------no other place on earth (that I have visited) has the effect on me like the Canyon does. It is simply breath taking!!!

Thanks for posting these pics, David.

Before the Grand Canyon, we toured Hoover Dam... only about 20 miles from Henderson...

Hoover Dam was pretty impressive!

David K - 11-30-2007 at 10:34 AM

We took the tour down inside the dam, mountain, and tunnels to the generators...

David K - 11-30-2007 at 10:36 AM

Because of 911 terrorism, trucks are no longer allowed across the dam to reach Las Vegas/ Arizona... so a huge new bridge is being built across the canyon at the dam...

David K - 11-30-2007 at 10:45 AM

Here's the 'wet' side of the dam... Because of the draught, the water level in Lake Mead is low...

Mexitron - 11-30-2007 at 11:02 AM

Nice pics DK! If you ever head farther east you might try Big Bend National Park--I haven't explored it yet but all the pics and stuff I've read about makes it sound like the higher elevation areas of Baja(Ocotillo, Agaves, etc.) with some beautiful terrain. Lots of dirt roads to drive on. Its our next place to go when we can find the time.

dean miller - 11-30-2007 at 02:26 PM

David,

You always post interesting subjects and many bring back memories of times and events past.

I took a number of geology classes in my younger days..I was so interested in the subject that I made two hikes to bottom of the canyon while stationed at Luke AFB.

The frist hike was in March down the Bright Angel trail, a very gentle walk to an over night at Phanton Ranch.

The second was in November down the north Kaibad...That was a very steep long trip. Once again over nighting at the Ranch.

Would suggest that some day you and yours ( and some of the readers) give it a try before AGE catches up..Well worth the blisters and sore legs..

David, I took the same Hoover Dam tour, it was something!

Went to the Grand Canyon too, didn't know about the train though, would love to do that!

Barry A. - 11-30-2007 at 02:47 PM

Of course, the ultimate GRAND CANYON trip (IMHO) is by boat-------now that is an experience that you will NEVER forget! especially the 18 day trip entirely thru the canyon.

When Lake Mead fills up (someday?) I want to take my small Gregor boat UP RIVER as far into the Grand Canyon as I can go-----sorta a dream for me.

-------come on rains!!!!! :O:bounce::biggrin:

David, did you stay at the El Tovar as part of the train package?

No, this was a quicky tour to give us an idea of what is there for a future extensive trip... We stayed in Williams both nights at the Grand Canyon Railroad Hotel... The train ride was about 2.5 hours long each way and we had 3+ hours at the canyon... The rim trail hike was great (about two hours)... ending at Yavapau Point (?) which had a museum that explained the geography & geology of the canyon well. There is a free shuttle bus along the canyon edge that we took back to the train station... and we had time for a drink in the old hotel.

David K - 11-30-2007 at 06:18 PM

The train robbery was a fun show... began as gunfire from the banditos on horseback that 'force' the train to stop...

Back at the hotel in Williams, there was lots of Christmas decorations...

just like Puertecitos, not Port-a-sitos...:light:

Thanks Ken.... I was using the English spelling (as in British Columbia, Distric of Columbia, Columbia River) at the time, and forgot the country was spelled Colombia!

Now that Baja Nomad has a non-Baja trip reports forum, this thread can be moved!

Has anyone ever done the mule ride into the canyon and stayed at Phantom Ranch?

I had an original painting of the "El TOVAR on the Santa Fe". Forgot artists name and date but I bought it for $75 at an auction to benefit the Harvey House / Santa Fe Railroad museum in Barstow, CA and later sold in on ebay for $250.
