What if any changes will be made to returning to the United Sates from Mexico or Baja via land or air. Passports, border crossing cards etc ?
When will they start to require this documentation?

Ground pounders are being asked for their passports today, but do not need anything but a driver's license or other gov issued ID.
Come January, all ground pounders will need a driver's license or other gov issued ID AND a birth certificate to prove that they were born in the USA.
No passport yet, but it would be a really smart thing to put a copy of your actual birth certificate (not hospital document) in a plastic sheet and be

When I came back from the 1000 race I asked the agent about passports for returning by car or on foot and he said sometime in 2008 it would be

DCCF, I am torn. Mine expires in April but I figure now is a good time to get a new one, as you mentioned. Do you have to relinquish your old one

I have heard that the new passport requirement for ground travel is contingent upon the new "Pass Card" program being implemented. The "Pass Card"
will be a credit card sized id card that will work the same way as a passport, but will be cheaper and (supposedly) easier to get. Until the "Pass
Card" program launches though, our understanding is that the actual passport requirement will continue to be pushed back. At this point they are

I thought the passport requirement for land travel had been pushed back to Jan 1, 2008. This is the first I've heard of another extension. I'm not
questioning anybody, just wondering how I've missed the news!! Please share the source of this information, we thought we'd have to stay stateside
for the holiday since we're too damn busy to get our passports in order. Maybe we can be in Baja for the holiday after all! Yippee!!!!!!!!
And oh yeah, I've read about the "Pass Card" in one of the Baja publications, just didn't know whether to take it seriously or not...........

* JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license,
plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.
* SUMMER 2008
At a later date, to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules
require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted
traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business;
