San Felipe Bound

timperkins - 3-23-2004 at 11:07 PM

We're getting ready to make our annual trip with the kids to Baja, so I'm back with more questions... I feel so bad 'cause I can't contribute more to this board - But I promise to post a trip report when we get back.

This year's destination is San Felipe. The plan is to leave in early April and take our F250 and Lance Camper through Ensenada to Hwy 3, to Hwy 5 and then south to San Felipe. From SF, I'd like to try and make it to Gonzaga Bay, then round to Hwy 1 and back home. If we can find nice, quiet camping in the San Felipe area, the Gonzaga trip might get scrubbed... Just depends on Mom's mood.

So - I'm looking for suggested camping spots bewteen Ensendada and Gonzaga, giving the mentioned route. Something quiet, next to the water, good beach with good weather.

Thanks,

Tim

Here's the perfect place, if it is quiet you seek... http://community-2.webtv.net/vivabaja/nm

Try Playa Escondida. It is just north of Puertecitos. That is where the road turns from a kinda road to a twisty dirt road with cliffs. There are Palapas for rent there right on the beach as well as close proximity to Puertecitos which has a store for food and beer. There are some hot springs in the town of puertecitos and a nice resturant called Bahia Christina about 4 miles south. Also on the last day you could hit San Felipe and do some browsing. I would go through the El Centro Border crossing by taking the 8 freeway from San Diego. There are no toll roads that way and the pavement is nice all the way to SF.

Check out our website http://www.gonetobaja.com the palapas are 10 bucks a night and have a brick bbq and trashpick up. We also have several boats at the campo now if you want to go fishing for the day.

You can contact me to reserve a space or just show up and ask for Pancho. Look for a brown 4door truck.

The entrance to Playa escondida is on the left side of the road just before the entrance to Puertecitos, look for a boat on the dirt painted up that says the name of the campo.

Hope you have a great trip!

When you say "Plan to leave early April"... how early? Semana Santa is from April 3rd through 11th (holy week). There will be thousands of locals flooding the beach areas during that week, thousands.
Try to make it to Gonzaga Bay if you can - the lance camper will make it (mine did) but it will be slow going. Have fun. Look forward to your trip report.

We're down bewteen April 2nd and the 8th... Right in the middle of Holy Week. Sounds like we'll need to get south of San Felipe if we want to avoid the crowd.

A friend told me we should consider Mike's Sky Ranch for our first night... Your thoughts?

Think you will find it's still pretty cold at Mikes Sky Ranch right now!Still pretty early for REally warm weather up there!

Camping in Gonzaga

David - I'm planning on staying in Nuevo Mazatlan for our first night, but what about camping in Gonzaga? What would you recommend?

If you don't click on Today's Posts and read all the boards quickly (vs. going to each board to see what was posted there), then you may have missed my detailed answer to Baja Pablo on the Q & A board.

His thread is titled "It's never too early to plan for a BajaTrip" (or something like that)...

Please see my detailed Gonzaga Camping info. there. It is just above the driving times to San Felipe & Gonzaga you asked me about...

if your self contained i would try around punta santa isabel(next to isla elhuerfanito) youell have it to your self and its not as far as gonzaga. it has good fishing and miles to ride your motercycle, allso a nice beach. theres many camping spots in that area to choose from to get away from the crowds and this is my favorite.
