It's raining

BajaRob - 11-30-2007 at 06:56 AM

at Bahia Santa Maria. The fragrance is incredible. It looks like we have much more on the way.

ELINVESTIG8R - 11-30-2007 at 07:06 AM

It's raining here in Lake Elsinore too. Another 2 + hour one way drive in the rain to work in Orange County. Ay ay ay ay ay como me duele mi ****. I wish I was there smelling the fragrant smells too.

Cypress - 11-30-2007 at 07:12 AM

It's raining pretty steady in Mulege.:) Sounds good on the tin roof. :)

bigboy - 11-30-2007 at 07:37 AM

Same here in Capistrano Beach!

Light rain

BMG - 11-30-2007 at 07:40 AM

just started about daybreak here in La Paz.

nobaddays - 11-30-2007 at 07:57 AM

At the foot of the most beatiful pier in the world, Manhattan Beach Ca., it is raining too!

Leo - 11-30-2007 at 07:59 AM

In TS we had a short one overnight and now, 7.30 it started slowley again, but looks like that it could match up to a good steady rain for a while. Yes, and it smells great.

bajabound2005 - 11-30-2007 at 09:02 AM

and in Ensenada, too.

Yes, after a couple of hours of rain night before last..... it has been raining for several hours now in La Paz.... At first I thought the tinako (sic) was leaking on the roof, and I was pleasently suprised to find it was actually raining.... the air smells so good (not like dust).

This is my first rain since moving to La Paz and I love it:bounce:

Hook - 11-30-2007 at 09:17 AM

Well, I'm not letting Capo Beach scoop me..........

Been falling the SJC at a rate of maybe .25 inch an hour for about the last hour and a half. One brief break.

I love waking up to the sound of rain...........it's been so damn rare here in SoCal.

David K - 11-30-2007 at 09:31 AM

Here in Oceanside (San Diego County, CA), I woke to the sound of rain at 5 am and it has been pretty steady since... some even hard rain... (it's about 8:30 am now)...

Even though my business thrives on dry weather and I work outdoors (not today), we need the rain bad here in Southern California... I welcome today's rain (because we just finished a drainage system in Escondido yesterday)!

It always comes after the fire season and so we get mud slides because the brush that holds the earth on the slopes is gone, burned away.

I am sure Baja California can benefit as well...

castaway$ - 11-30-2007 at 10:04 AM

Well here in Southern Oregon it's sunny and 70 degrees, not really, it's foggy and cold----it sucks.
I wanna be in Baja!!!

Rain drops

bajajudy - 11-30-2007 at 10:51 AM

It is sprinkling here, barely even wetting the ground. The weather channel says more tomorrow.
I love clouds!

Paula - 11-30-2007 at 10:58 AM

Fairly heavy rain since early morning here. It's beautiful, and we need it, but I wonder what it is doing to the road to San Javier? The festival up there will be starting tomorrow morning, with people walking from Loreto Mission to San Javier Mission, and lots of people driving up too. I'm hoping to go up on Sunday, stay till Monday if it seems safe to drive.

Cypress - 11-30-2007 at 12:21 PM

Is this much rain at this time of year normal for the Mid-Baja area?:o Been raining fairly hard all day.:tumble::tumble:

backninedan - 11-30-2007 at 12:50 PM

Think I will skip the drive up to the mission this year, that road is going to be a mess. The folks walking up have all my sympathy, thats a long trek on a muddy road.

I've heard that it isn't unusual, though it hasn't happened the past two years. Three years back Nov and Dec were wet in Loreto.

Bob H - 11-30-2007 at 01:20 PM

Raining steady here all day so far today in San Diego North County. It smells a bit like a wet ash tray outside - all the rooftops, roads and other structures are finally getting all that ash from the fires wash off.

Drive carefully out there - the roads will be very slick!

San Clemente checking in....yup, rain here too!
Is THAT what that smell is? I thought it smelled funky when I went outside...wet ashtray describes it perfectly!

Still raining in La Paz.

BMG - 11-30-2007 at 03:01 PM

It's been pretty steady all day. Nothing hard, just a nice light rain.

further south it is clear, blue and hot

davidre - 11-30-2007 at 03:06 PM

High temp 86 / low temp 78

latitude 18 degrees

Hook - 11-30-2007 at 03:07 PM

Yeah, the various weather services really blew the predictions on the amounts of rainfall up here. Every forecaster on the 11pm news was predicting .10-.25 total, as well as the NWS. Many areas passed that amount by 10am and it has actually been increasing as the day has progressed.

Massive area of moisture; look at this!

Image is updating and not too relevant now. Deleting.

vandenberg - 11-30-2007 at 03:18 PM

Drove from La Paz to Loreto this morning and had rain all the way. From Constitution to Loreto very heavy at times.
Satellite shows more on the way and some "heavy stuff" for the southern part of the State, from La Paz to Cabo.
Dry in Loreto at the moment.

shari - 11-30-2007 at 04:17 PM

this is the hardest rain and heaviest wind I have ever seen in many yeas here...it is raining very very hard and blowing now more than 30-40 knots and I fear the palapa will fly away very soon...the surf board took flight a while ago....super nasty...worst storm I've ever been in here...holy crap....why didn't we know about this thing...we should have boarded up the windows as it looks like they might shatter in this SE wind...damn...hfeavy wind with rain has penetrated all south facing windows and doors, we blocked off the door with plywood but are now in the middle of a full fledged gale/hurricaine...luckily I assisted an 86' yacht take refuge in a secret hurricaine hole behind San Roque Island...they are anchored there now sitting pretty and very grateful! This is TOOOO weird

Hook - 11-30-2007 at 04:21 PM

Based on reviewing the sat photos of the last few days, Shari, it looks like some cumulus clouds have formed in the midst of this low pressure system that has been very evident for a few days.

I dont think your winds and heavy rain are going to last as long or be as intense as even a tropical storm. I'll bet it's pretty localized.

Small comfort, I know............

shari - 11-30-2007 at 04:26 PM

I am just amazed how quick this came upon us and how intense it is..some serious wind and rain....hope it doesn't last long, I'm goin to town to take some pics of the damage.

bajajudy - 11-30-2007 at 04:36 PM

Just started really raining here. Not heavy just steady, straight down rain...the kind we like...no wind but dark skies. I can barely see the mountains.

Hook - 11-30-2007 at 04:37 PM

Looks like Ensenada is getting hammered, too, and major rain is headed for east San Diego County!!

major rain

Still raining Rob? (3:45 p.m.) How long did it rain on this day? (Friday) Any wind?

We will be back down next Friday a.m.

More work on the High House!

Then back again Christmas Day for 12 days.

The sky is falling

SUNDOG - 11-30-2007 at 05:13 PM

All the locals here in La Mision are running through the streets screaming the sky is falling in spanish, it's allmost like they have never seen rain before.

The La Paz satellite shows you're in for a good solid soaking for a few hours.:P:P
But isn't that just the way we like it :?:
And usually wish for much more of this :(

SUNDOG - 11-30-2007 at 06:16 PM

Still raining fairly hard here in La Mision
I was just down in the ejido, and all of the Mexicans are running through the streets looking up in the sky, and screaming the sky is falling in spanish (El cielo esta cayedo), it's allmost like they have never seen rain before, but it has been a while.

Shimmer - 11-30-2007 at 06:20 PM

In Todos Santos, it rained lightly almost all day. A little heavy in the late afternoon, then stopped. We had a sunset but it feels like its going to rain tonight. Right now, the winds are howling in Las Tunas. Our mexican friends are calling this ekipatas ??? Something about strange December rains. The desert plants are singing tonight and by morning the frogs will fill in the song...... Green is on the way

psmith - 11-30-2007 at 06:58 PM

Raining in El Centro, CA since about 5pm. We must have exceeded the 0.43 inch per year already.

best, paul

marv sherrill - 11-30-2007 at 07:26 PM

Crusoe - 11-30-2007 at 08:11 PM

Very cold, and wet, and blowing like stink, here in beautiful Quilcene, Wa., at the foot of the magnificent Olympic Mountain Range in the always wet and cold Pacific Northwest.Working outdoors each day as a house framer in 32 degree weather, we really enjoy a hot buttered rum at the end of the day. Mixed snow and rain forcasted for the Washington coast thru this weekend, and temps droping into the high 20s for tomorrow. North Cascade Highway will close due to 90 kt winds forcasted. Enjoy ++C++:O:O

Wow, I've never quoted myself... anyway, the wet ash smell went away as we had almost 2" here at my house. Washed all that ash away! But, I now see that I have one of my gutters to clean out. We had puddles all over the place in our garden, but it ALL soaked in to the ground - so thirsty the ground was for this. My two avocado trees are so happy now!
Bob H

Sadly........

Hook - 11-30-2007 at 09:42 PM

..........it has stopped in SJC.

BornFisher - 11-30-2007 at 10:22 PM

Do you remember the name of the yacht you assisted take refuge at San Roque Island? Is it the Northern Star? Friends of mine were in Turtle this morning and were going to head south to Asuncion, weather permitting. Thanks for any information you may have.

Winter Rains

amir - 12-1-2007 at 12:52 AM

The "Equipales" are seasonal winter rains that have been scant or totally absent in the last many years. Old timers in Todos Santos and surrounding ranchos told me of regular gales in the winter (and interesting stories that go with them), but it's been well over a decade since a good winter downpour. They usually only last for a few hours and the intensity of the wind and inches of rainfall can be very variable, multidirectional and mercurial.

It is impossible to predict and give ample warning for one of these unpredictable natural events. Those who have experienced the sudden deluge of a winter storm can now take preventive measures for the future.

Besides all the inconvenience and terrible loss of property, I pray that there have been no serious injuries as the result of all this rain, flooding and landslides.

I also hope that the bottle of rum somebody mentioned as an emergency ration, proved its utilitarian efficacy during distressing stormy natural events...

.

baitcast - 12-1-2007 at 05:02 AM

Kingman AZ. rained all night wind from the southwest heavy at times, after no monsoons this summer we really needed this, but ok enough is enough:O

Jack Swords - 12-1-2007 at 05:36 AM

Equipatas...horses' feet. Considered a light rain sounding like horse trotting. We had these rains in Todos Santos frequently in the '80s.

Hey Chuck

BajaRob - 12-1-2007 at 05:47 AM

The rain has stopped and Yuma Doppler is clear. The winds persist but hopefully will lay down soon. See ya Friday.

CaboRon - 12-1-2007 at 10:03 AM

The rain has stopped here in La Paz, I am hoping for a few days until I can do some quick and dirty repairs.

Woke up about four this morning to step into water covering most of the bedroom floor. Seems the drainage holes were drilled above the door sill.

Working with the hairdryer now so that I can do a quick silicon fix to hold until after the storm.

The last homeowner never mentioned this...and evidently there are no disclosure laws in Mexico.

Buyer beware, even when buying from a gringo, or maybe especially when buying from a gringo.

Stay dry,

CAboRon

I would not characterize this as a winter storm. I think it's more like the last remnant of the tropical season, given it's character and temperature.
