Sordo Mudo Camprgound in the Guadalupe valley

BajaVida - 12-1-2007 at 04:56 PM

Has anyone stayed there lately?

We stayed there a couple of summers ago. The operators were away for an emergency and some folks from the school came down told us they would unlock the restrooms for us and never did.

where in la valle?

Sordo Mudo is between the town of Guadalupe and the large Domecq building toward Tecate.

is that the one on the left or right heading from Ensenada to Tecate? I know there are two. The one on the left looks locked up....from the Hiway.

I never stop there but Rancho Sordo Mudo is a facility for the deaf and mute. That, for a long time, has been on the left going toward Tecate. I think the campground is across the highway. Not sure about that part.

You are right Dennis

We have stayed there a couple of times , after coming through Tecate late and running out of daylight . It is a pretty spot but noisy as it is close to the highway . Sometimes there is a person there in little trailer to take money , sometimes not .

It's a great campground. Clean and hot showers. I always stay there on m y way down and back. On the way down I donate toys and clothes to the school. It is a donation only campground. I always stay a couple of days as I like to go to the wineries right next to it. Good wines and really good t-kill-ya at LA Cetto. There is usually a couple living in a trailer, but this past May no one was there. The bathrooms were open.

Stayed there many times on the way back to the US. Sometimes hot water and clean bathrooms, other times not. Cost was around $5 collected by a man living in the trailer. Grounds are nice, were invited for a meal across the street at the deaf school (didn't go). Good spot if you are in a motorhome or trailer, nice sites. We camp and started just getting to US and Potrero park or a motel. Rarely saw anyone there, just empty. Still retain it as an option.

Don Jorge and Jack. I agree it is a great stopping place. I cross in tecate and spend a few hours there shopping and arrive at the campground around happy hour with that fresh Tecate beer. One year I had a hip operation and was in a brace. The campground keeper brought me coffee everyday and checked on me morning, noon and night. I always have 4 bags of clothes and/or toys for the kids. One year they came over and sang to me. Not back for kids with repaired hearing. "Jake brakes" are the only problem if you are a light sleeper. If you ask they will even let you use the laundry room for free.
