Saved from the Shredder- New Pig Picture

DianaT - 12-3-2007 at 08:13 PM

Recently found this old slide that John took on a graduate studies trip in 1970/71 to Baja---doesn't remenber where it was taken---one of the old mission ruins they visited.

Just found a few more slides from that trip while visiting my mother-in-law---John thought his ex-wife had all of them. Can't wait to scan them.

Also saved some slides from the shredder---89 year old mother-in-law is sorting and was sure no one would be interested in their 1966 trip to San Quintin and to the mainland of Mexico, and their trip in their camper to Cabo the first year the road was paved----glad we got there in time!

Could that photo be of Santo Tomas?

Natalie Ann - 12-3-2007 at 08:23 PM

Oh Diane, your visit was fortuitously timed. I'll be looking forward to seeing some of those old photos. Get your scanner warmed up.;D

Paulina,

John thinks that is where it was. He also has a picture of a little school house in that area.

You will like his favorite picture when I get it scanned---a large pig being slaughted on a rancho where they stayed.

I can't wait! I love old photos. I have a bunch too, but darned if I can't get them from scanner to computer to some kind of a readable program....it's tough to be computer challenged.

Natalie Ann - 12-3-2007 at 08:37 PM

Awhile back I learned how to do all that, Paulina.... and then I seem to have just forgotten it all. Computer challenged, memory challenged... life is heck.;D

Any suggestions on how to get some old pictures back from an ex-wife? John said he left them because many of them had her in them---but one could always use photo-shop.:lol::lol:

Tell us what operating system you have, what photo program you have and what scanner brand and model you have. Maybe I or some other Nomad can help you.

Most scanners generate TIF files. But the internet displays JPG files mostly. You need software to convert from one to another.

Is that the problem?

Mexico City 1966- Teotihuacan John took classes in Guadalaja the summer of 1966--Guadalaja was a city of 500,000 at the time, and Teotihuacan as quite a ways outside of Mexico City

No Wal-Mart then!

Ok, with all of your help I think I'm getting this. Here is an attempt to scan with Microsoft photo editor - then into photobucket. This is as big as I can get the pictures to come out, so far.

Thanks Diane for the subject idea. I knew I had a pig photo somewhere that needed scanning.

Paulina - 12-3-2007 at 10:57 PM

This is my last scanned photo, as I don't want to hijack this thread anymore than I already have. I think this pig had an idea of his destiny and was attempting his great escape while in the back of a truck traveling a bit south of La Paz in 2003. He was persistant, but I have a feeling he didn't make it.

bajadogs - 12-3-2007 at 10:58 PM

Diane,
I love the photo. I'm so glad it was saved, and I'd love to see others with a "When and where" caption.
Gracias!

Packoderm - 12-4-2007 at 12:21 AM

I don't see how posting interesting photos of Mexico can be considered hijacking this thread. I really enjoy them.

That piture of the slaughtered pig

Keri - 12-4-2007 at 07:40 AM

is taken on the patio of cielito lindo.. Must have been one of their pig roasts. Might ask Juanita when that was taken, she will probably remember the people,k

DianaT - 12-4-2007 at 08:54 AM

Paulina,

No---certainly is not a hijack---now I get have to get some of those slides scanned later. Great Pictures.

Yes, we believe that pig in the truck knew its fate. In Honduras we used to watch them drag them into the truck screaming and yelling, and then scream louder as they drug them into the market place----made me think about eating bacon.

Thanks Diane...

The first photo had me thinking of Mision San Vicente because of the slope down from the adobe... I will pull up the pics of San Vicente and Santo Tomas after work today and see...

A look back into the past... keep posting!

Poor guy. And no spider to help him out of this jam.

1970 Grad Class Trip

DianaT - 12-4-2007 at 02:25 PM

Slides not in greatest of shape.

Dinner being prepared at one of the Ranchos where they camped.

El Rosario---stayed at Mama's place, the old place.

A school he thinks was up a canyon before Santo Tomas

Now, if we could just get the ex-wife to give up the photos she has----not a chance.:lol:

Now to scan some of the saved Mother-in-law pics

I believe that Teotihuacan was thought to have had about 500,000 residents. It also has changed since 1966. Many more excavations and temples visible.

Here is a 1955 photo at San Vicente mission from the valley looking up:

and another Howard Gulick photo at the mission:

Do you think it could be the same???

David K - 12-4-2007 at 07:14 PM

Here's a 1961 photo of the Santo Tomas mission... in the distance...

Here is Santo Tomas in a 1975 photo by 'Academicanachist' (Dr Jackson):

The same place last year...:(

Does look like maybe it was San Vicente---he really does not remember for sure.

Thanks

Paulina - 12-4-2007 at 07:43 PM

Is this thread going to the pigs or what?

You guys are going to be sorry that I got the scanner thing figured out!

Here is my very first pig encounter. You could probably guess that the year was 1980 by my sunglasses and Dolphin shorts. This was taken in San Felipe as I was walking to Club Bar Miramar. The pig head gave me a start, and my friend just happened to have his camera ready for the shot. I think he knew it was there and I was set up.

It is kind of a happy looking pig head...

OK, lets keep it gone to the pigs

DianaT - 12-4-2007 at 08:14 PM

Love that Pig's head and the outfit!

One being delivered to the meat market---ok, not Baja, but Santa Barbara del Cobre on the mainland

And these cute piggys were in the market in Patzcuarro, Mexico

Our lawn mowers in Honduras---these guys ran loose in the streets along with some cows, thus we and the dog took worm medicine every three months.

Got to find the ones from Equador where they had a roasted pig on every corner---same pig was there for days

ELINVESTIG8R - 12-4-2007 at 09:02 PM

When I was in the mountains of Chihuahua the outhouses had no holes dug in the ground for human waste. Instead the lower back portion of the outhouses was cut away. Take a wild guess what happened to the excrement…You guessed it the pigs would come in and eat it. These same pigs were slaughtered and eaten by the people. I just loved chicharrones.

Paulina - 12-4-2007 at 09:09 PM

It was against my religion to eat pork.(Edit, it is still against my religion, I just don't practice it) After reading your post David, it is easy to understand why.

I had to post that information about the pigs of the Chihuahua mountains. I am sure things are a bit more sanitary today.

that piggie wanting to get out of the truck is so sad..............:(

Couldn't let the tread end on a sad note.

oladulce - 12-8-2007 at 11:44 AM

Happy*, free-range playa piggies at 9 palms:

(*Happy to share watermelon and dig for crabs at least)

(this was a pig thread, wasn't it ?)

DianaT - 12-8-2007 at 12:00 PM

Those are great free range happy pigs and great pig pictures---

But, are they destined to grow old peacefully and die of natural causes??

Naw, but they seemed to have a pretty good life for a pig and somebody enjoyed delicious jamón with mysterious hint of crab flavor.

Thought I'd posted these pics before along with a little story and I just found it (under my initial nomad identity). Sorry for the repeat. http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=10682#pid8221...

Paulina - 12-9-2007 at 11:31 AM

That was a fun story to read again. Thanks for bringing it back up.
