free road access in TJ

Twice in past week, have been contacted by Nomads looking for Ensenada Free Road access in TJ. Some of this is due to constant hassles on toll road between northern-most toll booth and border crossing.

My reasoning includes savings of approx $17 on my round trip visits to San Diego.

1. Upon crossing at SY/TJ border, choose 2nd lane from right.
Enjoy taxis entering/exiting and wave at the "Scenic Road/Ensenada" exit sign(do not exit). But, get to the far right lane here or you'll enjoy an unwanted tour of TJ.
2. After you come down the ramp into TJ, pick 2nd lane from right, keep going straight past the "scissors"(nickname of sculpture) roundabout.
3. Large green highway exit sign clearly marks right turn onto free road to Ensenada. Choose the far left or second from far left lanes once you make this turn. Far left lane may clog in traffic due to left turners on busy road.
4. Marges with toll road at 11.5 miles in Rosarito. You can hop on toll road here, but, exit in 3.5 miles at AM/PM/PEMEX to avoid 2nd toll booth.
5. 9 miles of free road, including southern Rosarito shops,
Fox Studios, before next entry to free portion of toll road.
6. Exit toll road at La Mision/LaFonda. Beautiful mountain
scenery for the last approx 25 miles here. This part takes
10 minutes longer than toll road and only experienced drivers should handle it at night due to mountain and switchbacks. It will put you 1/4 mile south of last toll booth as you approach Ensenada.

I estimate that I have taken this route 24 times since July this year due to moving my furniture and shopping for furnishings. Never been hassled, but, I drive an '89 Cherokee that was once white.

20 minutes max total drive time, longer same miles and, IMHO, a more scenic drive in every way.

Instead of driving through the city and then up blvd fundadores it's quicker to go around the city using the route to the scenic road. When you get to the playas exit at the bottom of the hill keep going straight on the libramiento sur which joins up with the free/libre road.
