M.Y.O. "GREATEST HITS" of BAJA HWY 1 HOTELS -

Hello fellow Nomads-

I love all the individual posts regarding a favorite hotel in each city / town.

It would be sweet to see a GREATEST HITS list of HOTELS going from
North to South...Some of you are very well travelled from border to tip
and it would be interesting to compare your lists...Like a CD or greatest
hits album, they don't need any long justifications, just city, location
and costs...JUST BE SINCERE AND WRITE ONLY FAVORITES

Here's a brief (incomplete list) example:

Mulege- Coyote beach camping in the little palapas (hotel rooms)

or maybe gamble and get a room(anywhere) in town.

Could you guys change saying 'behind the Pemex' and say 'next to the Pemex instead?

Two reasons: if you are driving north, the motel is first, and 'behind' means 'in back of' or 'hidden by' the way it reads to me.

The Old Mill is not 'in town', but over 3 some dusty miles on the bay... the last time I was there...??

The list is a great one, and I am only wishing to make it read more accurately and not complaining...

I used to stay at Hotel Mulege on every trip. It's been years has anyone stayed here lately? It used to be $30 for a/c, tv, clean room and safe courtyard parking.

In Loreto I used to really enjoy the old El Presidente in Nopolo. I stayed there the first week it opened and many many times after that. It has changed names (and themes :) ) many times over the years, don't even know if it's still there. Last time I saw it it was called Whaler's Inn. Liked the Flying Sportsman, it's not there anymore. Stayed a few times at Oasis and La Pinta, they're ok. Last time I was in Loreto we stayed at a place called Baja Outpost, on the malecon. Nice cabanas, interesting layout. Don't know if it is still in business, they still have a website.

Cabo San Lucas is bewildering to me now. Used to love Palmilla and the old Hotel Cabo San Lucas. Also liked the Hacienda. But everything has changed now and it's like a big city. Quien sabe??

We also stayed at the El Presidente in Nopolo back in the early 80's. I was there last year and they were tearing it down. The nursery for loreto bay had their office there and you had to drive over there to pay for the plants. Nice nursery. They were taking the buildings apart peice by peice. Hammer and chisel.

Los Jardines in San Quintin - much closer to the road than the Old Mill and much nicer IMHO.

Interesting that there are now two new towns I've never been to. Is "Ciudad Construcion" anywhere near "Consticion"?

When I was staying on the beach at 'rattlesnake' near Juincalito, occational stay at El Presidente was great. Then the names started changing, and now 'nada'!!!!!!!!! What a shame. Was also convenient to stroll over for an evening livation when the 'home bar' became boring!!!!Years ago we stayed at a motel in Todas Santos, that was near the south end of town, westerly about three blocks. Can't remember the name, and was $20.00 u.s. at the time. This trip north from Cabo we noticed a brand new hotel/motel??????? in construction right on the hwy towards south end of town on the west side. Old Mill brings back memories in our trips during the "wet season". Was always a 4X4 trip in our pickup. Slipping, sliding not knowing how "deep" the water was going to be. One yearf we were towing a small Wells Cargo trailer. That was fun. Luckily, the bed of the pickup was carrying something like a "light ton" of 'stuff' for our home in Nopolo. doubt if that road will ever be improved. Just another adventure will experiencing "Baja"!!!

SAN QUINTIN- Villas de San Quintin- 35 spotless rooms with internet and an Italian-ish GREAT restaurant. East side of Mex 1 near the bridge. No pets/total no smoke...including the restaurant! $41 USD-

LORETO- Iguana Inn - 4 spotless rooms/ one a kitchenette. Off street parking- WiFi...about $40 as I recall. Two long blocks up from the water on Revolution

GUERRERO NEGRO-ISH- we used to stay at the 'so-so' Snail Motel mentioned here earlier until we ran across the very cute/quiet/clean and friendly place 40 minutes to the south of Guerrero Negro called Kademan's Motel in Vizcaino. It's right at the Y. This last year we have down-graded the cute restaurant to * from ***, but it is still non-smoking. Breakfasts are still ok. Here you can park right in front of your modern and spotless room. WiFi/non-smoking rooms- no pets. Twelve rooms @ $39 USD for two

MULEGE- why they named it Squid Motel I'll never know, but for 35 bucks, you can't find a cleaner place with great beds in Mulege. Go right through town on the main drag and spot the sign almost to Saul's market. Ultra quiet/ off street parking

It's about the highway through town these days.

As a problem solver and very diplomatic person who likes to see everybody happy, I would have to call it CIUDAD CONSTITRUCCION for now.

Hotels: San Quintin: Los Jardines, (or is it Dos Jardines?)
San Ignacio: Casa Leree or Ignacio Springs
Loreto: Iguana Inn
La Paz: Lorimar is a good cheap one. No secure parking, it's on Nicolas Bravo one block up from the malecon. La Perla is OK too, but it costs more.
