Good informative post Roger, especially about tieing with terminal tackle.

How can you determine if a lure is better w/ or w/o swivels etc. Do you ever use wire leaders while trolling? Gracias.

Also, there are wire leaders now that are flexible enough to tie into knots. I just tie my own loop knots out of the wire material rather than those 6 inch wire leaders with a swivel at each end. The tied wire leader seems to hold better than the swiveled one because nothing is being crimped. Crimped leaders depend on friction to keep from slipping which I think is inferior.

Wired line is far more expensive but I find it worth it for the above reasons but mainly because fish often seem to target that swivel that's tied to the line. Having observed many hooked fish the hooked fish is often followed by a group that try to extract the bait from it's mouth. During these situations they may get excited and actually snap at the swivel just above the lure causing you to lose your fish (and lure).
