Do I need a license plate?

mgray - 12-13-2007 at 04:03 AM

Is a foreign license plate required? I would think the chance of being targeted would be less if they didn't see the out of country plate? But I also dont want every cop seeing $$$$ when I drive by.

They see so many Canadian plates, they assume that Canada is a state in Mexico or someplace.:lol::lol:

You need plates front and back.

If it is a brand new car, you won't have plates and that is no problem... I took my Tacoma to Baja the same day I got it!

In Baja Sur in La Paz or Cabo or in any large city you need plates front and back with current reg or a temporary paper permit in place of the plate and if you don't you will be pulled over for sure, likely everytime you pass the transit police until they each know you. Also if you look mexican and you have foreign plates you will be pulled over to check it out.

Its different in pueblos and beach towns since the transit police have other games to play and there are fewer cops.

Just to be clear here, if you don't have plates the car is suspect, possibly stolen and missing something important. The police will pull you over because they need to check and see why. When they pull you over they may not directly ask you about the plates they just want to see who you are and if you are likely a car thief or what. You can play dumb, you can show them the papers of the car you can say the plates were stolen in TJ. You can say whatever you want, but know they will pull you over and say hi eventually, its no big deal if you play it out politely.

Arizona has only one plate. Guess I have just been lucky over the last 40 years

Other US states require one in front as well. Not here in Louisiana, but friends that hunt every year in Texas have out them on their trucks just for this reason. so also check laws regarding other us states if youre pssing through them.
