SD to Mulege-advice?

agra - 12-13-2007 at 09:56 AM

My boyfriend and I live in San Diego and are thinking about doing a road trip down to Mulege at the end of March. We have 9 days total. I've been as far as San Quintin a couple of times for volunteer work, but have never really explored on my own past Ensenada. I'd appreciate any words of advice/experience with the following:
1) Is this a realistic plan (given the amount of time we have) or will we be driving the entire time? We'd like to avoid driving in the dark. We're thinking of stopping at San Quintin and San Ignacio on the way there and Guerrero Negro on the way back . Any advice on driving times between these places or cool places to stop for would be great!
2) What will the weather be like in Mulege at the end of March?
3) We are planning on crossing the border and then renting a car in Tijuana. Should the roads be paved all the way down there?
4) Any recs on things not to miss in Mulege? Good place to rent kayaks or hike?

Thanks a ton!
And Happy Holidays..

Good idea!

1) It is about 12 hours total driving time from SD to Mulege. Stopping in San Quintin and San Ignacio breaks it up into easily doable legs. On the return trip, leave late, stay at Guerrero Negro (La Posada de Don Vicente) and then you are about 8 hours to the border. Long wait to cross normally.
2) It is apt to be windy (March) and somewhat cold, but starting to get warmer.
3) Mex 1 is paved all the way and by and large in excellent condition. Allows good speed albeit not in curvy sections. Drive sanely!
4) Casa De Los Suenos south of Mulege by 15 miles has good accomodations and kayaks are part of the package. So is Playa Frambes a super upscale location, kayaks, swimming pool, sailing, all part of the package they offer.

Then as always, enjoy your visit. Lots of warmth down there, not just temperature but from the people. You will have fun!

I can't really speak about extended stops along the way, since we usually hightail it down to Mulege. But San Ignacio is a beautiful place to stop.

As for Mulege recommendations, for a really good taco, try "Asadero Dany's" in town, down from the square. A very simple restaurant, with a very simple menu, but we're completely addicted.

We only have 8 days (well, two of those days are used to drive to/from San Diego from/to our home in Santa Cruz County), and Mulege is our destination every year. I think with 9 days from SD and making some stops along the way, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the Mulege area.

Have a great trip! Be sure to tell us about it :) And let us know if you have other questions!

Well, I think if you're already in San diego, you should try and make it farther than SQ or ER on the first day. They're likely to be cold and overcast anyway.

I'd cross at first light, join the new protective "wagon train" set up by the Mexican authorities (it's in place, right? :smug: ) and try and make for GN. Then, take the first part of the following day for a possible whale viewing in Scammons. You should still be able to make Mulege that same day.

NOt that GN wont be cold and overcast, too, of course. The whales will make it worthwhile.

On the return, I'd spend your final half day in Mulege and leave for SI around noon and see town and stay the night there. From there, I'd head to Ensenada and party it up your last night in Mexico.

Then cross before 9am the next day.
