If You're Heading for Border to Cross at San Ysidro...

DON'T!!! The road that parallels the border? They started some work going toward the border today. We were coming back INTO Baja and ran across this. Southbound, no problem; northbound? Hold your horses. The traffic was backed up for MILES. They have one lane closed and sort of dug up; like they are finally fixing those broken water mains that have been leaking on to the road for almost a year....looks like that lane will be closed a few days (at least....). If you must cross at SY, find another way to get there, or take the easy way out and go to Otay!

Or just take the free road :light:

Can you avoid that section by taking the free road???

bajabound2005:
you run the free road from the border, thru tijuana and enter the toll road north of rosarito. you are no where near the border fence road, or the big hill, or the first toll booth. it is very nice.
there is alot of traffic at the beginning (from the border, southbound) because it is through tijuana, but it is better than the qauntlet.
read posts from fdt, i had trouble driving directly to the free road after entering tijuana, but fdt clarified it for me. i now know alot of the roads in that area of tijuana.
try it!!

:)here is the post by fdt:

:)and then to clarify the very beginning from the border, southbound i asked:

fdt, thank you for the link.
when i cross the border i stay in the right lane, go up the overpass and watch for signs that say aeropuerto. the next sign i see is via rapido. i take via rapido and then turn right on blvd cuahutemoc. this turns into the free road, so no more turns. is that correct?

Quote: (fdt's answer)

Almost but not quite. Yes, you stay on the right laes and just stay there, do not take via rapida wich is to the left, stay on the right lanes and that turns into Paseo de los Heroes, at the second traffic circle, you will see the statue of Cuahutemoc, there you make a right or even on the block prior to that you see the signs that say Ensenada.

:)if you look at google maps you can follow the free road from the border. i found that the very beginning was confusing. there are small signs along the way though.

whoa!! we are dedicated to the toll road (Sorry, Ferna!!!) but we only cross during the day (and this is northbound!!!) We have fallen IN LOVE with BV2000 and Otay and the SENTRI pass! Using the free road, trying to get to SENTRI in TJ....just not up to it. Tried one time to get to SENTRI at SY....ended up in the regular 2 hour wait line. At OM, we can't go wrong. Plus, all that construction on the FR south of Rosarito makes it VERY UNDESIRABLE; esp at night. No lighting. Abrupt lane changes or lanes suddenly hit jersey barriers....give me the toll road!!!
