Borrowing a car in BCS

Anonymous - 3-27-2004 at 01:27 AM

I have a friend in BCS who is making me the generous offer of lending me his car while I visit. My question is: Does my US insurance cover me when I'm driving a borrowed Mexican car? Would your answer change if I paid him for its use?

It is against the law for a foreigner to drive a Mexican plated car unless you have a Mexican drivers license.

I don't think US Insurance covers Mexico...

If my last enquiry is correct, your US insurance does not cover your driving in the Baja. My Canadian Insurance ends at the US/Mexican border and I always pick up Mexican Insurance. $100 for 6 months and I'm sure you can get it for less $ for a month or less time.

I wouldn't drive in Mexico without good Mexican insurance. Also, on mainland Mexico, you have to be the registered owner, or immediate relative of the registered owner to drive a car, otherwise they can impound the vehicle. Maybe it's different in Baja, but I'd check into at Fred Metcalf's Baja site, he usually has good information on this sort of thing.

borrowing car in BCS

If your a "really good friend" you'd ask to pay "your friend" the cost of his/her calling his/her insurance agent and adding you as an "additional driver" for the time you'll be using the car. You can be the best "never an accident" driving record, and have someone hit you, and if your not named as an additional driver or add'l insured, I wouldn't risk your financial holdings "borrowing a friends car" down here. Recent horror story in Loreto area of two fellows driving south with NO insurance, passed in a vado with no vision or knowledge of if it was clear beyond and hit a car totalling it, and injuring the female American lady. The fellows must have bribed the Loreto officials as they were able somehow to proceed on their way. So the story goes.
